I am doing my first Tri (Nautica Sprint) in September. I am using my mountain bike. I have clipless and will probably switch to slicks before the race...it is a heavier freeride bike (Rocky Mountain Slayer). My question is...do a lot of people, especially beginners use mountain bikes? I just bought this bike and probably won't buy a road/tri bike till early next year. So I may need to use my bike for a couple events. Just wondering what your thoughts are....

hello,
i am jealous that you own such sweet bike. it is a heavier freeride bike for sure. maybe you can 'borrow' a tri bike or road bike from a friend. if not, its all good, my first try was on a wal-mart bike...ooohhh yeah....

The Slayer isn't your best bet for a tri bike, but it'll do the job just fine for a sprint. At this past year's Wildflower Tri, my friends and I saw a guy doing the half Ironman on a mid 90's trek rigid mountain bike with slicks. Look at it this way, you riding a non-tri bike just makes you more gnarcore than everybody else. I have an extra set of semi-slick cheapo tires from Performance that are just sitting around. Granted they're not pure slicks, but you're welcome to use them if you're interested (I'm also in The OC).

Reflux that would be awesome. I also live in LN! How funny. PM me if you can and I can tell you were to send them or I could meet you at Aliso Wood Canyon or something like that. Thanks to all of you...I am training with T in T right now and feel like a poser since I am not on the right equipment.

I did my first tri on a mountain bike. It's a good way to see if you like doing tri's before you buy a road/tri bike. Plus the crowds can get a little excited when they see a mountain biker on a road course... you'll hear a lot of "go mountain biker!" It's cool.

You could always do an off-road tri. Xterra puts on a bunch of them. However, I have no idea what they're like cause I'm doing my first Xterra tri in August.

At my first Sprint Tri. I was going to use my Trek 6500 with some slicks. I pre rode the course and after that decided i needed a road bike. I borrowed my best friends lite speed. I took 36th place overall on the biking portion out of 500+ participants. I dont care if its lance armstrong on a huffy mountain bike he will get dropped by the hard hitters with the road bikes. I would seriously advise you to borrow or rent one. If you are doing this race casually then dont worry about it. If you want to smoke em then get a road bike and unleash the fury. I passed tons of people on mountain bikes they can not hang. If you alot of down hills as well you will easily maxout the speed of the bike. Also aerodynamically speaking, you are practically standing up the whole time on a mountain bike, your chest is a brick wall taking all of the wind.

two cents

GOOD LUCK
