HR Question

I am frustrated and looking for feedback. FYI, my LT is 139 bpm and my max HR is 151; both were tested 60-90 days ago.

In my last tri, my HR for the events were:

1. Swim - Average was 138, max for the swim was 145 at the end.

2. T1 - I hit 151 bpm running up the very steep hill to the bike area:)

3. Bike - Average was 141 bpm, max was 147.

4. Run - Average was 143, max was 147.

My question is what % of time should one do threshold training vs. base training? I can run/bike at threshold for a long time but I'm unhappy with my speed. Should I go back and work on base???

Thanks
Roy

Work on your endurance base the majority of the time.

Last year was my second summer of training. I was often riding near my LT of 165bpm; averaging maybe 150 to 155. It got me good results, but my hill-climbing ability never really improved.

This year, I've doubled and tripled my mileage, and necessarily have reduced my intensity. My heart rate during most rides has been in the 135 to 145 range. My hill-climbing ability has improved substantially. Moreover, last night I did a short time-trial, and my heart rate ranged from 172 to 178. I estimate that my LT is now about 175 --- a huge improvement over last year (greater than my HR "max" according to various formulas).

So build your base. Speed and hill-climbing ability will come later.

Good luck in your training

Continue building low intensity base miles. This helps your cardiovascular system become more efficient in pumping blood to your muscles and removing latic acid. It will help raise your LT and help you be more efficient in your training and racing
