Ventura Breath of Life Olympic Course
6/26/2005

A nice day at the races; all the usual; great organization, great volunteers, great cause, great weather.

Swim 1500M: Water was cold ~62 deg. Would be my estimate. My Seal Mask worked to perfection, my sighting was just about perfect, but I’m still slow. I finished with the MOP’s of the wave behind me (five minute intervals). 37:42.

T1: Had a bit of a problem putting ON my racing jersey (I know, I should have worn a tri-suit under my wet-suit). I’m still retro when it comes to triathlon gear. My arms got tangled up in the dri-fit running top and I couldn’t extricate myself; it was pretty funny and infuriating. 5:56.

Bike 40K: Jumped on my retro bike (17 yr. old Trek 1200, no aerobars, but I do have clip-ons). And headed out to the lettuce fields of Oxnard. Yes, Ox-nard, Johnny Carson’s favorite town. Since I was being passed, I got a good look at the panoply of bikes out there in the triathlon marketplace. Saw three flats, and two crashes and a couple of ambulances. My back was killing me from staying down on the handlebars, so I got out of the saddle regularly. Very uneventful ride. 1:23:24.

T2: 1:59.

Run 10K: My legs are moving, but I feel like I’m running at 9:00 pace, but my Garmin tells me I’m going 7:30. So here is where perceived effort has nothing to do with the real pace. I’m happy my Garmin is telling me to maintain the pace even tho’ it feels slow. So I relax and enjoy the view, which is stunningly beautiful; summer is here in So. Cal and I’m loving it. The surfers are out in force and there are dozens of them hanging out on our running path; tailgates right up to the path. Definitely an alternate universe. We’re busting our azzes and they’re smoking pot and grooving. As I cross the finish line I punch my Garmin and amazingly, it comes up exactly 6.20 miles. 47:43.

Total time: 2:56:39
268/509 overall
15/27 Age Group (M50-54).

Okay, I’m on course for my L.A. Tri in Sept. And the Long Beach Marathon in Oct.
If I can knock off 20 minutes on the Oly and 15 off my Honolulu Marathon time, I’ll be a happy camper (at least for 2005). I’ll qualify for Boston 2006 and a good Oly time will motivate me to spend some money on a new bike and a tri-suit. Thanks for reading….

NIce report. Good job. I was also at the same race as you. I would have met you in the beer garden, except i'm not old enough. (I'm only 19). This being my first olympic distance race, i really enjoyed it. The water was very cold. It would almost guess that it is the high 50's, but 62 sounds pretty accurate. All I know is that my face was very cold during the swim. everything else was pretty uneventful, like you said. I saw the flats and one accident. I'm just glad I didn't get a flat. I also saw a surfer apparently hit himself in the face with his board. I had to laugh a little while i was running by. ( It was at the end, by the turn around). I think my legs were hurting the entire 6.2 miles of the run, but that didn't seem to stop me. Overall, it was a fun race.

swim: 28:57
bike: 1:17:36
run: 44:07
T1(estimate): ???
T2(estimate): ???
total: 2:30:38

I couldn't get splits for the transition times, and i added it upand it's all weird so i don't know what they are. they were decent, but not fast by any means. Next race lined up in LA Triathlon in September. I'm hoping to knock some time off of the bike and run there, and maybe if I'm lucky some off of the swim. We'll have to see how the training goes until then.

I think we both know what to do between now and Sept. (the L.A. Tri); good luck in your training. I'm quite sure we can cut some minutes off our times. Venice beach is about the same as Ventura; the bike ride should be a little hillier in L.A., but I prefer a few hills (it prevents TT'ers from going flat out in aero position). and the 10K will be flat.
