Howdy Yall,

Ok, a question on HR, and I'm curious if anyone else sees the same thing.

I ran an International Duathlon this weekend, (5K,40K,10K), during the first 5K run, my HR averaged 155. On the ride, HR average 135, then the 10K, the HR average was 157. Overall average was 145, with a max of 167.

This compares pretty closely with past races, a typical 5K Road Race for me, has my Average HR near 155, and Max HR at 170 or so.

Is anyone else seeing their bike leg HR be much lower than their running? For some reason, I'm putting out lots of effort on the bike, and don't seem to be seeing too much in the speed department.

Guess it doesn't help when I'm 6'5" and 205 does it? Right now, the bike leg is my weakest leg.

When I ride during the week, 30+ mile long ride, my Average HR is 145, and Max near 170. So, my training ride is tougher than my races, and I know I'm holding a little back for the last run.

BTW: My times this weekend were, 5K - 20:55, 40K Bike 1:16:03, 10K - 47:33. Finished 11th overall, 1 Female and 1 Team were ahead of me. So 9th overall Male with a time of 2:29:18.

Congrats on the good result.

I've always been told to expect my HR to be lower on the rides than the run. The difference being that while running, in addition to motion, your muscles also have to support your weight, whereas the bike provides most of the support during the ride. The difference in the HR's that you mentioned are more or less proportional to what I see in my own workouts and races.

Toronto Tri Gal, If all your workouts are in low training zones, that's probably where you should try to stay during the races. If you want to race faster, then try to get on a plan that slowly starts raising your HR during your workouts. I do all my training with a HR monitor. But during a race it stays at home. Just relax, and run your race like it's a workout. Just my 2 cents. Good-Luck!!!!!!!

Thanks Jamie!

Guess I need to put a little more thought and effort into my bike training...

Glad to know that I'm not slacking too much on the bike leg.
