I just did something stupid

I let myself be registered for an elite-level sprint race...
... what usually gets me through triathlons without being embarrassed by my performance is telling myself, "hey, it doesn't matter how slow you are, the point is that you finish and have fun." But I can't help but feel that in an elite sprint, my speed DOES matter a whole lot! And I'm not awfully fast.
I'm almost considering scrapping it and doing the age-group race, but it's more than twice the cost, plus it's an Olympic distance. And I got my drafting certification specifically for this race!
What would all you brilliant triathletes do/suggest/recommend?

And because it is drafting it is not a triathlon - so I cannot help you, sorry.
Close to a joke...
Swim fast to get hold of the pack on the bike. And then draft till the run begins. Hopefully you are not dropped. And in the end you can say: I competed in an elite race!

There's an old saying in the bike world:
In order to get faster, you have to get dropped.

I got DROPPED at my first MTB race. And I def. did get faster after that. Racing on that level puts everything you do training wise into perspective, a perspective you can only get by actively seeing and experiencing.

sounds like fun! maybe i'll do one sometime when i get faster... (I do do road races and crits and stuff so i know how to draft).. Good luck!

Getting dropped isn't a tri term - it's for cyclists. It means getting dropped off the back of the pack in a draft-legal race (they all are really) where you need to stay with the other cyclists to get the advantage of a draft. It makes a huge difference because cyclists are not generally allowed to race in aerobars (except for time trials) and therefore need to ride in a paceline to get a break from the wind.

Getting dropped is less of an issue in "crits" - criteriums where you are racing several laps around a very short course. If you get dropped, you can sit up and wait for the pack to catch you up. On a road race, it's worth sprinting to try and catch up. Get dropped in a road race and you're kind of screwed.

actually in a crit if you are dropped you better chase like crazy out of the saddle sprinting! at least in collegiate you aren't allowed to draft off people that aren't on the lap you're on and they usually pull people about to get lapped unless the field is really small and the official can keep track of it (and many time they can't)!
