Number of turtles saved on tonights ride
Can't beat that.....a huge snapper just laid her eggs in my yard for the 8th year in a row. She's huge, I'd guess about 65 pounds.

She's a biggin'...lol...we don't mess, just let her run her course and don't mess with the yard in that area for a while.
The only snapper I've seen that large is my lawn mower.

Hey Chris -
Make sure you help them cross the road!
If you put them back where they started, a few minutes later, it'll literally be crunch time!!!

Where were you when I ran over a really stupid chipmunk last week????? Damn thing ran across my path safely, but then decided at the last minute to turn around and run right back under my wheels - no time to avoid him. I'm still feeling guilty...

If you have a big snapper and don't want to touch it, get a stick and have it bit it, then pick it up (it will hold on) and move it away from the road.

when i lived in GA my dad and i were riding on a paved trail and this ground hog thing ran out infront of me and its head got caught in my spokes...u could hear its neck crunch.....just thought i would share that with yall
If you get a flat, and don't have a tube, Suck it up and run it in!!!
Tamara--- I had almost the same thing happen to me in Rock Creek last weekend. I wonder if it was the same one... it seem to have a death wish
Last summer on a bike ride past the reservoir lake I found a turtle in the middle of the road, head and legs drawn in. Several cars had only just gone by so I was surprised he wasn't squished. I dismounted and moved him to the edge of the pond, not knowing if he was alive or dead, but he immediately scampered into the water. Good deed done.
That little episode made my bike ride all the more enjoyable.

Thats crazy tcrunner. I always kinda wondered what would happen if something jetted into my spokes. Did it knock you off the bike?

I hit an in flight crow about two weeks ago... I was in a group ride and it was avoiding the big guy next to me and ran straight into my leg (I broadsided it so no beak no claw damage to me)! Also, I saw a teammate of mine run over a live squirrel once... and my dad ran over a live squirrel too...
Funny you bring it up. On my ride the other day I came across two kids trying to help a turtle cross the street. The problem was they were scared to death of it. Being the former zookeeper, I gave em some tips and a hand. It was pretty funny, me waddling over there in my road shoes and spandex.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
What a sweet post! You guys are so critter friendly. The wildlife here in NZ doesn't seem to be as prolific on the roads I ride on (not that I'm hoping to bump in to a Possum anytime soon, they're mean and could eat me!!), the biggest thing I've hit was a humungus bumble bee and yes I did feel bad about it. Why do they always head for your forehead??? :p

I wish this post had started a little sooner. A week ago I ran into a snapper in the middle of the road, he wasn't too big, maybe just a little smaller than a dinner plate. And im thinking, my hands wil be fine as long as i come in from behind him. Well i was about to grab him and the little guy jumps at me and totally freaks out. Now i'm a little worried about losing part of my finger. So i just scare him into the pond beside the road with my size 10 bike shoes.
I was a little embarassed that i couldn't get a turtle off the road considering i own a turtle. But he wasn't nearly the size as this one and wasn't nearly as aggresive or a snapper.
Just thought i'd share
Peace
Tyler
 ~~Cheers~~
even if you pick them up from behind their necks reach as far back as their shell(base of tail). So really you don't want to mess with them much. Get them to bite a stick or something and then carry them across the road. I've had a couple snappers as pets.

One...... i always move the turtles off the road :) then I have a nice sprint to chase the pack.
