I had ACL surgery about a month ago and have since developed some tendonitis behind my knee as recovery has been occuring. My PT is having me do A LOT of stretching in that area, icing after any workout, and just strengthening on that area (hamstrings). Maybe this will help....

when there is swelling in the knee it is maily in the back of the knee. the best thing is to ice the crap out of it and check our bike fit. you may be over extending or under extending which is causing this. The cycling is actually really good for you knees as long as the setup is right.

when i had ACL surgey the PT would start me with 15 or 20 mins. on the bike.

Could be an imbalance in strength between your quads and your hamstrings. Might want to strengthen your hamstrings with some good morning exercises, etc.

This rule has gotten me quickly through every tendon, shin splint, or knee-cartilage injury of the last four years:

Ice and advil. If you're injury prone, ice the at-risk areas for 15 minutes after every workout. If you're actually injured, ice for 15 minutes four times a day. My favorite are "colpac" brand ice-packs; they stay flexible at freezer temperatures so you can wrap them around joints, but they don't leak all over the place like a bag of ice. Use Froogle to find 'em cheap, you can get the 11"x14" ones for under $15.

Take 2 advil four times a day to additionally help bring down the inflammation. Take food with it and don't take it before bed or you might screw up your stomach.

Back off the intensity to let it heal, but do get some light exercise to keep the blood flowing.
