I had a first in an Olympic distance triathlon this last weekend. When I got off of the bike and began the run both of my quads began cramping. I was able to finish the run but experienced cramping in both my quads and by the end of the race, my hamstrings as well. I did not do anything differently during this race than I do during my training. I have actually done longer rides followed by longer runs during training with no problems. It was only about 65 degrees with high crosswinds so heat wasn't the issue. My swim and bike were both fine. Anyone have any thoughts or what I can do to avoid this in the future? There were points when I felt like walking(but didn't) and when I tried to stretch my quads, my hamstrings grabbed so that wasn't an option either. I hydrated as normal during the bike and run so I'm not sure what went wrong. I ate two Clif Bars prior to the race, one at 5 a.m. and one about 15 minutes prior to the start. I'm a former College Linebacker and go about 6'2'' and 215 pounds now.

I don't know what the future holds, but I know WHO holds the future.

Greg,
Been there done that. I'm 6'5" and 210 right now, and during my marathon this year, my quads siezed up near mile 24. The problem you have is you're missing electrolytes!
I've started using Accelerade on the bike, it has Carbs, Protein, and electrolytes in it. I used it this last weekend during an International Duo, and no cramping, even though the temps were in the upper 80's.
