Tried on the Pearl Izumi's Microsensor and Ultrasensor shorts today it fits okay but it felt like I was wearing diapers or something. The store didn't have the tri shorts I was looking but it didn't feel like I would be comfortable running while wearing the shorts with padding. Is it just something I gotta get used to? will the pads break in?

No generally tri shorts have a very thin pad in them you really shouldn't be able to feel it at all. If the store didn't have want you wanted try doing a search online there are some great products out there.

There is a big difference in the amount of padding in a standard cycling short compared to a tri-short. Most seem to find tri-shorts fine for running. Although, at long course races (1/2 & IM) you will see plenty of people hit the changing tent in T2. I would recommend trying a good pair of tri-shorts, I wear Desoto's Power Short. Great muscle vibration reduction and decent padding for the longer rides. Finding a short that you are comfortable running in is a trial process. Problem here: gear is not cheap and you really won't know for sure until you use it in training (at which point there are no returns or exchanges).

If your having trouble finding the right equipment at local shops, try either one of these online stores:

trisports.com
all3sports.com

They have a good selection of tri specific clothing.

I just bought my first pair of tri shorts. They are awsome!!! Until this point I have been riding and competing in runnning shorts.... tri shorts feel like a luxury compared to the running shorts.

I bought them from sports basement, not a bad price.

I've raced in both Pearl Izumis and Zoot Tri Shorts, and both are pretty lightly padded. For the International Distance racing, I've added a Qunita Roo Seat Cover. This provides some extra cushion where it counts, drys quickly, and I don't have to run with a diaper on.

I do like the new Zoot Tri Shorts, since they have slash pockets on both legs. It's a pretty slick place to stick a Gel or two. Not to mention a place to keep a Business Card with Emergency Phone Numbers on it.

I bought the sugoi turbo tri, just enough padding for the bike, but you dont even notice them when you run or swim. I just swam in them for the first time tonight, they didnt move and were very comfortable,
