Man I am just starting to get sick of running. I went on a 30 min run today and it was garbage. I was really trying to focus on running and improve with 4 days a week but I wasnt really getting any faster so I cut back down to 3 days a week. I still see no improvements and it seems like it gets harder and harder. My motivation has gone down the craper I still love to swim and I push myself on the bike but the run is just killing me and I have another race in 5 weeks. Sorry guys just had to rant a bit and get this off my chest.

Hey Ryan!

I am coming into the tri world as a distance runner...It's my passion...I also coach high school cross country...
Tell me...how was the 30 minute run today crappy? What is your typical running workout? (3xwkly)...I need more details please...Nutrition? Recovery from other workouts? Bricks?

You will strike a balance...I never thought I would look forward to getting into the pool and now I love my swim time!

Sound like a classic case of burnout to me.......try cutting back to 2 days of running and vary where you run..we all get bored with the same scenery day after day. Maybe try some cross training or a game of basketball...anything to get your heart rate up for a few minutes. Last year training for IM USA I was so sick of my bike I tried to give it to one of my buddies (its a $3000 bike). Luckly he wouldn't take it. Don't stress about your race, your aerobic fitness from swimming and biking will help on the run even if you skip or shorten your run workouts...remember this is supposed to be fun!!!

Good Luck

That is frustrating -when you invest so much on your sport and don't see the payoff.

I've seen many athletes who hate running learn to love it after slowing down for most of their running. Athletes tend to gravitate toward doing everything moderately hard, when we get much better results from going very easy for about 75% of our work and hard when it is tme to go hard. You may benefit from doing a really fast walk for 10 moinutes to warm up before you ever start running.

Also work on your running technique. Fast runners run differently than slow runners ... literally bouncing down the street using the elastic tissues in their feet and calves like springs. More information about running technique is available in my book The Triathlete's Guide to Run Traning and the DVD that Joe Friel and I produced, Evolution Running: Run Faster with Fewer injuries. Both are available at Fitness-Concepts.com

Look for a solution. Don't think that just running more and harder is the solution! My book is full of good information or a good coach could get you set up to et faster and to see the improvements. Whatver approach you take, do something differently. Good luck, Ken

I hear you. What I do when I am bored of the running thing is I put on the headphones either radio with a talk show or the tunes (which ever I feel I want to concenrate on) and GO FOR A RUN. At what ever speed I feel like moving. I concentrate not on the running but on the music or the talk show. Its like watching TV. I have a great scenery of the montains and ocean and just cruise with no goal in mind. Sometimes I just cock my head back stare at the cloud formations or close my eyes periodically and fall asleep?......That way you get something out of it and at least you are working on a base! Just my 2 cents worth!

Exactly what i do Bluebird. Whereas I am still new to triathlon, I have run for many years training for beach volleyball. You definitely need good music (Personal fave is an 80's compliation, fast stuff) I also train members at a YMCA and the personal TV's that are connected our treadmills and elipticals make it so easy to go for a run, or eliptical ride. Just tell yourself to do it, get the music, and the boredom will subside.

Try to mix it up as much as you can - drive someplace new to run, run on the beach, run some hills, do a fartlek, go to a new track...

My favorite has been to sneak onto a golf course at night and run around there.. it's a blast, especially if it's hot and the sprinklers are going off!

Changing your route really makes a marked improvement. I had 2 or 3 routes that I ran all the time - gets boring fast - but these were courses that I had measured distances etc.
However, once I got my GPS (Forerunner 301) I could go on whole new routes and would still have all my milage, pace etc. It has made it much more interesting. Nice to be surprised by a hill or some really nice view.
