increasing speed

So I am training for my first tri (Hilton Head sprint in September...yes it's a long time from now, but i've got a lot of improving to do too), and am finding that my bike splits are woefully slow. Turning out about 13-16 mph on rides of 10-20 miles. What is the best way to increase that speed? I know it's not equipment, unfortunately, so I'm willing to try most anything. Right now I'm not doing intervals or a lot of hills, just trying to work up my endurance. Thanks.

find a group to ride with. Intervals are a great, great speed booster. The main point with them is to not let your recovery pace and cadence drop too low. Hill training is a great toughness builder. Make sure your bike is properly adjusted as far as fit. Saddle position alone can improve your overall speeds.

If its not the bike, it must be the engine. So build a stronger one; an endurance base with LSD - long slow distance. Forget about hills and intervals until you've put on more mileage. And don't forget to keep your cadence up - around 90 rpm.

Ride, ride, ride. If you want to really improve, you're going to have to ride a LOT. You may not see the speed increases that you want this season, because it can take a year or more to build a good base foundation. I was not terribly fast when I started riding either, but I noticed marked improvements after a couple years of consistent training.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I have seen some pretty solid improvements in my run times over the last 2 months and I suppose I was looking for something like that on the bike...but I can wait. Riding a specialized road bike now (love it), and may look for a tri specific bike after a couple of seasons in the sprint events. I don't know that an ironman distance race is anywhere in my immediate future, but it sure seems like the ultimate in the sport. Thanks again for the advice.

Just for kicks, do you think that Cervelo is making the best tri/TT bike out there? sure seems like they're getting a lot of good write-ups lately.

Cervelo makes a killer bike! I've had my P3 for almost a year now and there is NOTHING faster; end that debate! They have really focused on the tri/TT market at all levels.
