Nobody will look at you strange if you choose to wear one ...
Some people might wear the Speedo's, or a longjohn swimpack or whatever. You make your own decision in that respect (as long as it is approved by the referee ...)
I like the feel of the wetsuit, so even if it were very hot, I'd still feel more of a Tri-athlete and up for the race wearing one.
These guys are right, wear it! You'll find the more competitions you enter, that most people wear them (if they are allowed). Here in the northeast the % is much better than half. For me, the benefits in terms of time and energy savings are so great I would not want to swim in a race without it.

I just participated in my first tri early this month and wore a wetsuit. It was lake swim and the temp was 67 degrees. I have another tri in July (also a lake swim) and the avg temperature in the past years has been around 78-80 degrees. As a newbie/novice I'm not competing for any awards just for fun. (I know the rule for competing/awards is no wetsuit after 78 degrees.)
I was wondering if other folks (not looking to compete for an award) choose to wear a wetsuit even when the temps are 79-83? I'm not trying to be vain but I don't want to look like a nerd w/ my wetsuit on if the norm is that most people don't wear them in that 79-83 margin. For the most part I really benefit from the buoyancy of the wetsuit because the swim is my worst leg. I was curious to know if others continue to wear a wetsuit for that reason.
TIA!
