I'm back from my first tri, the Memphis in May Olympic distance tri. It was a great race. The swim, the last bouy broke off and started flotaing away, me and about 100 others were swimming towards it. The people in the canoes were yelling at us to cut across the lake. The run was hilly, the bike was flat. The tranistions were slow, I ran the wrong way coming from bike to run. Here's how it broke down:

Swim: 31:06 no wetsuit ranked #28
T1: 2:50
Bike: 1:18:37 ranked #25
T2: 2:44
Run: 1:04:47 ranked #31
Total: 3:00:01

I had a horrible run, probably beacuse I couldn't get any gels in, felt like I was going to throw up on the bike and run. I crossed the finsih line and my coach was there, he picked me up and gave me a big hug, I think he was happier than I was! :D He said that his first triahtlon was the Memphis and he came in 4 seconds ahead of me. He said, "See where you could end up?!" He does Ironman races. Maybe one day.
So does anyone have any tips on what I should do next time?

nice job no matter what you may think about your own preformance :)

also nice job not getting screwed up on the lost bouy.... never seen that happen before.

whats next? .... um.... half IM? (the challenge could be doing it this year)

I've been asking around on this board about a 1/2 IM. I also want to train for my first marathon this fall. The 1/2 IM that I'm looking at is in the same month??? Suggestions on what to do? Thanks!

Since this was your first attempt, I think you should be proud of yourself in outlasting for the whole race.
Think of it in this way ; now you get a second (and more) chance(s) to do better ...
I had my first tri-race on competitive basis of late, and I too got over-excited and forgot the obvious things such as the gels/powerbars/drinking in time (just too enthousiastic I guess?) !
I know this now and try to keep it in mind! I considered it just a studyround anyway (and you should too) : look at the other people, HOW they make transistions, what they wear/ride/run in ...
You can only learn from it.
Good Luck
