Very few athletes see HRs as high on the bike as the run. Running uses greater muscle mass, enabling the muscles to demand more of the heart. These differences vary dramatically beteween individuals. On average, basic endurance pace (aerobic threshold) will be approximately 8-10 bpm lower on the bike nd lactate threshold 3-6 bpm lower. If your differences are higher than average, tht is gnerally a sign that you are force limited ... which is an indicatrion that strength training and low rpm segments should be prioritized and that higher cadences will work better for you once you've adapted to them.

I've tried a couple of brick workouts - your legs really feel like bricks don't they!!
My knees aren't all that happy during the run segment of the brick and I was wondering whether modifying my cadence near the end of the bike segment would help them adapt when I began running. I try to keep my cadence in the 80s (upper 80s is my goal) and I know that 90s would be even better during most of the ride, but should I really spin before transition or push a harder gear to prepare my legs for the run?
Another question: I wear a heart rate monitor when I run or bike and I find it difficult to get my heart rate elevated and maintained at the higher level on the bike. It is not that I am so incredibly fit  that it is low - I just have a hard time pushing myself on the bike. I suspect it could be that the cycling specific leg muscles aren't well developed yet in comparision to my cardiovascular conditioning level. Of course I could just need to push myself harder too. I ran for a year before I added cycling recently and I run I can hold my heart rate at 145-155 and even 160 doesn't feel that awful but on the bike I have to concentrate to get it over 130-135 - anybody else experienced the same thing?
