Hi all,
I have a triple chain ring set on my Specialized road bike, and lately, when I shift to or from the smallest chain ring, the chain falls off! The bike is rather new, and I have been tightening up the all the cables as they stretch. But the front derailleur now seems to be in proper adjustment. A friend of mine said that the chain might be the wrong size. Has anyone had this problem?

i actually had that happen to me a few days ago during my ride. and of course i was in the middle of a rotary with crazy mass. drivers... luckily i was near my exit and just pulled over. i was not happy with my bike (and told it so in rather colorful language) but was able to just slip it back into place. i;m not sure why it happened though... my guess was that i was already on the smallest ring and then i tried to go down one more? not sure.... i hope it was my own stupidity though, since i just picked it up from the shop a week ago! anyone else have a guess?

:)

Chains do fall off more frequently with triples if you are not careful to shift gently and sometimes it still happens. Half the time you can get it back on by shifting into the big ring, but half the time you can't.
There is like a $3 plastic piece you can buy, i forgot what it is called, but you can get it at you bike shop and it will prevent the chain from falling off...
Ok found it: the "third eye chain watcher" - its a mtn bike thing, but it works for road bikes too

Well dropping a chain really shouldnt happen on road bikes/tri-bikes...unless you are mashing the pedals and find yourself in a position where you NEED to change gears. Its probably a really simple adjustment with the set screw...see your local bike shop..and they should be happy to do it for free.

on a triple the chain will fall off occasionally (much more easily than on a double!!) even if the derailleur is adjusted properly especially if you use the granny gear... on my old triple, eventually i just tighted the limit screw down because I didn't use the granny gear anyways and that solved the problem...

chains fall off...it happens. The trick is to be able to put the chain back on without stopping the bike. If you drop your chain to the inside, simple shift out and it will go back on the gear. If you drop it to the outside, shift inside.
