how do you carry extra equipment?

I have seen a lot of photos of race ready bikes where the racer straps extra tubes and tire levers and a inflator under the rear portion of the seat - to the rails, rather than using a saddle bag
does anybody do this?
how do you get the equipment to stay secure?
I was thinking about velcro or maybe twistie ties
thanks for the input

Try electrical tape. It holds it secure and is not as hard as duct tape to undo.

Hope this helps.

I have heard of putting things into a tennis ball container and placing in the bottle cage or even putting the things u need in a water bottle and in the bottle cage.

X-Lab has a nice product out (I got mine from Trisports.com) that attaches to the seatpost and can hold water bottles, CO2, tube or tire and even help rack the bike.

hockey tape :) it's very similar to electrical tape. an extremely complicated system - I throw my CO2 cartridge, extra tube, levers and patches into a ziplock and tape it to the rails of my seat. :D the tape re-sticks well too. if it fails to stick, I still have my bike shorts to stuff things in.

It just so happens Louis Garneau makes a small bag that fit perfectly between my rear mounted cages and the seat post. At first I used the electrical tape, but left on long enough it makes a mess and looses strength! (never tried the hockey tape, I know it is more durable) I got this bag for $9 and it has no down side as far as aero. I like it b/c it's on there all the time when I'm training or racing no need to switch things around.

I, too use a small seat bag. It fits perfectly like trithis' bag. Its secure and really doesnt weigh anything. Better that than having some tape come loose or having a tube stuck in a water bottle.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

cool ideas guys
thanks
I actually have kept my keys and cell phone in a water bottle before, but I got a "cage rocket" from cagerocket.com, which is a container that carries stuff which fits neatly into a cage
but it is a little bulky and it takes up a spot for a water bottle
it is great for shorter rides and training, but I didnt want to use it for racing because of its bulk and because I like to carry drinks with me

For my longer training rides (3+hrs), I wear a cycling jersey and suff all the crap I can it there. They have more room than a tri-top! It works fine, although, it is a little difficult to sort thru it all and get what I want while maintaining a decent speed. I usually don't spend any time organizing my nutrition stuff for training rides. Probably bad practice!

Races: I just put the necessary items in my the back pocket on my top. IM event aid stations have so much stuff (and come up every 10mi. or so) you can pick it up when you need it and use the pocket for the "special needs/just in case items". This helps keep the weight down, allowing you to get what you want and use it. Hydration: I fill all my bottles with Accelerade (used as feed bottles) and just pick up water and sports drink on the course.

I've seen those bento boxes, but I like to keep it simply. I feel like there is allready to much clutter on my ride!

Am I missing something here? Do I not carry enough stuff? How much do we have to carry for rides?

I went out on a 4.5 hr ride today (141km). On the bike I have a bento box that I put 2 powerbars and a cell phone into. In my back jersey pocket I put a bagel with PB (in a sandwich baggie) and I had 4 bottles (3 gatroade, 1 water bottle, in three cages, two attached to the back seat and the regular ones by the down tubes) and a large Profile Design straw water jug on the aerobars. I had enough food! Under the seat I have a little baggie I keep the multi tool and tube in.

I ate a bowl of oatmeal with raisons for breakfast and was fine with the food I brought for the whole ride. Got home and ate another bar as well as a smoothie with protien powder and went for an hour run. I would assume you all have pretty much the same stuff on your bikes, am I wrong? Do you guys carry more than that? Even with all the crap I was carrying I even had 2 more pockets in my jersey for more food but kept them open for if I had to take the leg and arm warmers off.

take a look at the FLATwing by X-lab...its different from the saddle wing and I think its better for numerous reasons..price, position and versitility. you get to have two bottles + CO2 and inflator(if you buy the adapter) and tons of places to hide you goods.

I used to have a saddle bag with all my tools and junk....and thats it.....but seeing the benefits of having the essentials plus the added bonus of carring water/energy and anything else you want to electrical tape to it....im sold...

Edit= I just really hate loading my jersey up with stuff as it seems to bounce and sway....quite a distraction when your out of the saddle

Yeah, I don't like having much in my jersey. Maybe a PowerBar or two. When I'm training, though, I usually wear a camelback (yeah, yeah, I know) and just shove whatever I need in there (tubes, pump unless it's frame-mounted, etc.). On a race, same deal, minus the camelback, plus one jersey pocket or a bit of electrical tape and the sacrifice of one water bottle cage. I subscribe to the philosophy of "the bike is sacred... don't put stuff on it... if you have to carry things, load up the cyclist, not the bike."

For Bluebirdbiker- sounds like you had more than enough food. Here's my typical long ride meal plan.

Preride breakfast - 3/4 cup oatmeal with honey and almonds, 500-750 ml of water.

Long rides @ 4hrs +
Bento box with 2 tubes, 1 CO2 cartridge, 1 gel 1 power bar
Specialized wedgie (under seat w tire levers, loaded CO2 gun, allen keys)
3 24 oz Bottles ( 2 behind seat in PD aquacage) 1 on frame all filled with accelerade,

If I am going longer then I add another bar or half bagel w pb for each extra hour .
