I am totally new to the world of triathlons. I started running last November in my bid to loose a few pounds...got hooked on running and then discovered this thing called Triathlon  . Having retired from contact sports such as hockey and soccer I just had to have a new activity to challenge me. I have a 3.5 mile race and a 10k on my calender so far this year and I am considering adding a duathlon in October.

I am just getting into this..I don't even have a road bike. I figure I will use the mountain bike for my first experience to make sure I really am addicted. Right now I am trying to figure out how to establish a training plan by reading as many books as I can get my hands on. I have been reading the posts here and figured..what the heck this looks like a place where I can learn something.

For the bike, ya might wanna look into renting a road bike. Many shops have that option. And if you like the bike, they might put the rental charge towards the purchase when you decide to buy.
As for training, split the days as evenly as possible between the sports, and make sure you have time for a brick(bike/run workouts) or two, the are THE esssential workout to be semi succesful in tris.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Hi
I got my bike by asking my local bike-dealer wether he had some older models (but NEW bikes) that he wanted to get rid off -> you know the type : perfectly good bikes, last year's model in a stock overload ... Anyway, he really wanted to get rid of it, I really wanted it and he gave me a big reduction!
Lucky me! :)

Furthermore, don't worry too much about planning and schedules ; there are a lot of websites out there that offer such training schedules and even online training-logs ... Because I practice other sports as well, I took a mixture of my squash-training and training plans I found on EnduranceCoach ... Together with some booksmarts (I bought 1 triathlon-guidance-book) and the expertise of my squash-coach I had a nice schedule.

I hope you can find some info and inspiration for your schedule on this and other sites/forums and in the books you find, but I would always suggest getting some additional help from coaches or more experienced athletes ...

Good luck!

I appreciate the information. I visited a local bike shop in my area after I found a link to their web page on a local triathlon club. They were extremely helpful and helped me with some decisions. I will rent a bike for my first attempt at a duathlon and will most likely try to strike a deal on a closeout/previous year model.

Thanks again for the feedback!!

I'm new to the world of triathlon and actually borrowed a bike from a friend. It's worked out well for me. My 2nd race is this Saturday and I've focused mostly on the swim. I plan to do at least 1, maybe 2 other races this year and will definitely focus on the bike portion. Duirng my first race, there was a hill halfway through, which forced me to walk the bike! There were so many words of encouragement along the way, that I didn't feel bad at all. In fact, I felt as if I was giving it my all in my effort to finish and never say quit! I was at the back of the pack during most of the race but still managed to pass one or two others. To say I felt exhilarated (sp?) upon crossing the finish line is an understatement. I felt so damned high and like I could do anything that I installed a laminate floor in my dining and livingroom a week later! Ain't no stoppin' me now!

MCole-

Welcome to the site - lots of usual info and advice from great people. I did my first two tris on my mountain bike for the same reason - wanted to see if I was into it - watch out, it's so addicting - and I went ahead and bought a road bike. Good luck with your training - keep us posted.
