my first tri is may long (21st, sorry canadian eh,this is a holiday weekend), practiced an actual transition in complete tri suit, hopped in the shower, than ran outside to where my stuff was set up, being in winnipeg, it was cloudy and 5 degress cel. with a north wind at 33kmh...this will be typical race conditions next week(bike leg runs north/south), the swim is in the pool, i tried first soaking wet, with just a bike jersey tossed on, froze my butt off, muscle cramps etc....tried with polar fleece, it held the water in, let the wind through ..froze my butt off....should i take the time to towel relatively dry, take the time to put on fall weather cycle jersey and pants, how bout mukluks?? help guys i know someone out there in crazy land must have raced in very cold temp....

Hey, I share your problem. I live in Van. I know I know....., but I lived in souther Ontario as well so I know the cold and I did ride in the early spring during rains. It was cold when I did the March tri here at UBC. I was in the first wave and it was cold most of us had to change. Mind you, not as cold as you have it. Nothing is as cold as 'winter pig' hehe, but it looks like you will have to spend that time in T1 to change. But remember, so will the others. Parctice before hand if its critical to you to have a good T1 and T2. First off layer. Wear a wind breaker over top! Also, in the winter I find that taking along a thermos in the bottle cage helps to warm the insides on a cold rainy ride. Just make sure that it won't burn you when you drink. You might want to keep another thermos or have someone give you a warm one back at T2. Hope this helps.

go to Mountain Equipment Co-op, you cant be sportsy in Canada and not know about MEC, they have a great wind type pant for biking, fits like a thick tight(has little reflector strips on the lower leg), blocks the wind yet breathes, wind stopper gloves, they also have a thicker pull over bike top, long sleeve, kind of like the pants, would still suggest a long sleeve poly pro under the long sleeve shirt, take off the heavy top at T2, then top it off with a thin poly pro balaclava. Isnt it grand in the spring in the northern prairies!!!! cloud, wind, cold and if it ever warms up and the wind stops the mesquitos(sp?) will be on the attack. However, nothing cold compares to the first few lake swims. And yes, have a big fluffy towel to dry off, good for you to race in such conditions, however, I think that weekend is shaping up to be a pretty good day, good luck!

Hey guys, its not all that bad. Here in Vancouver we (I) ride all year round, each day to work rain or shine. It never gets snowy (except for a day at most) letting us ride all year. Rain is the only real prob. Even when its -1C (29-32F?) its still nice to get out with some gortex gear and booties on the bike. In winter, on weekends after a nice 2-3 hr. ride I get home change into some drier clothing and go for a run. Rain is the biggest problem (apart from wind) but for running that's nothing. Of course, nothing like Winnipeg or the rest of Canada but we all can take it, we're 'Canadian Triathletes'....EH!

When I ride up the skihill early in the spring I get totally sweated up and on the descent, with windchill?
fugeddabouttit!

So I pack a waist-length, waterproof, windproof Goretex zip-up hoodie.
It rolls up small but is a real lifesaver.
Put it on, take it off, put it on again if it rains later.
The weather changes quickly out there on the prairies, eh?

-1 C for you in BC... -21 C for us in Alberta!
The wind pants from MEC are really good, or they have a pair that are like tearaways and can be combined with tights - amazing wind protection. I usually go with a lot of thin layers in the winter, and usually end up taking most off while I ride (resulting in looks from people just out walking, who think I'm crazy). Add to that swim training in ten-degree water... I suppose if you freeze enough layers of skin, anything goes after a while.
