Will somebody please remind me that I do this more me... My training has not been where it was last year (last year I had a month with nothing to do except enjoy friends and train in May between finishing classes and graduating college; this year I am working full time and not getting as much training in). I'm feeling guilty about not getting in teh pool or on my bike as often as I should... Somebody please tell me it doesn't matter if my first race is not where it was last year?!

At the same time will somebody please just tell me to get my butt in gear and get in the pool and on the bike!

The beauty of the sport is it's individuality. It's self measurement and competitiveness. It doesn't matter if you have bad days or even years - noone's going to cut you from the team. You just need to learn, as do I, to balance more of the training with your full-time work schedule. Eventually it'll all fall into place, but it takes a bit of persistence and consistence to create the workout habit. You need to start measuring your performance on your time given to train and not so much when you had the ideal training training situation. No one would be able to compete with their former self that had an excess of training available - except maybe the person who's had years of consistent training - so that's your goal. Slowly build up your endurance and eventually no doubt you'll surpass your college times. As well, endurance athletes tend to peak in the early to mid thirties - so you have plenty of time to be your best...

Now get off your butt, and I'll get off mine, and hit the pool, roads, trail - and enjoy it :D

Ya, they're way past the point of me catching up, somebody has to balance out the family and represent the mid-to-back of the pack racers :) But I'm not were I personally should be so will continually work on it. Need to draw off them more often. Has already helped having one of them up here. A little more consistent in training and better eating since Matt arrived.

The plan is definitely for the site to keep on keepin on even if I have to start taking the laptop on rides with me :D

Also, It's time to change your focus. You need to think about what you CAN do and not what you CANNOT do. If you are putting your energy into thinking about what you aren't doing or the way it used to be, you are wasting energy. Focus your energy on what you can do and how you can do it better. Like these guys said, balance is the key. Balancing gives you the best of all worlds. If you aren't training as often, then train harder when you are out there. Put your heart into where your goals are leading you.
So, going forward, make the best of what you've got to work with. You deserve to have the best of the best...but that means you get to create it for yourself, which means planning, planning, planning. Now, no more pity partyies. ;)

And planning is the best part! You get to make all sorts of charts and schedules, and ...!!!! The time is there. The will is there. It is your job to find it and embrace it. I too, after coming back from an injury, found it tough to get back into the grind. Now, if something happens, I get mad that I cant get out there. Like REALLY mad. And then adapt and overcome. I just think how proud my family is of me (the only currently active athelete in the family) and want to live up to them and exceed everything anyone's, including my own, expectations.

Competition. Drive. Pain. Exhiliration. Oh, yeah! I'm motivating myself here! Hop to it.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Congrats on graduating from college, That is a BIG achievement. Now the T2, the transition into a new world and a new life. Full time work can wear you down depending on where you work and what field you are in. How daunting it is. I personally found my life turning into that movie office space not too long ago. I was even laid off (low life greedy SCUM worldcom execs). At one point I was like " who moved my cheese " (good book). Anyway you'll find your MOJO. There are so few people in the triathlon scene when you look at an entire population. We are a minority for a reason. Its not easy. I do run into people and they tell me that its good I can sacrifice other things to do triathlon but for me none of it is a sacrifice. When you have passion for what you are doing. As you ramble through life keep your on on the whole donut and not just the hole.

Hey, I agree with all the others! Each period in your life requires a different approach!
I have been competing for 2 years now. I placed in my age group last year in my first International! I was still getting faster on the bike which quickly became my best event and had really improved my swim in the offseason and my run was totally exploding to where I never thought it would go. And......... I got a Perianal abscess, ouch and well it took me almost a week to go to the doctor..... to high of a pain tolerance from tri's and Army training I think! But the fever got the best of me! Long story short They had to cut it open and drain it! So I was left with an open wound on the bottom of my Buttock of about 2 1/2 inches long and about 2 1/2 inches deep which had to be left open to drain and heal form inside out. With a 6 week healing time wich means, no Biking, no swimming and I am just now going to start running, I may be retired from Tri competition this summer with my schedule and injury. Although through this whole situation I have gained a much more clear perspective on what this whole thing is for me!
I now plan to get up earlier to train, leaving the evenings for my family and leisure. I think my competitiveness got the best of me and I left things that were really important in my Training wake! I have been able to refocus, and not being able to work out has given me a new hunger to just enjoy the process of getting better! I used to think if My heart rate wasn't out of the stratosphere and I wasn't on the edge of total muscle failure every workout then I was wimping out, I plan now to enjoy the process enjoy the training and make plenty of time to enjoy my wife and daughter before it's too late!

Take this as a time to refocus I am!

If you need more support and ecouragement, create your blog on TriFuel, so you yourself as well as others can check your motivation and progress!
I find that the moment you make your planning (on paper or on Blog) you know what you have to do! You have it right there, black-on-white, so there are no more excuses to NOT do your training ...

I too feel a bit frustrated in lack of time and/or motivation ... Everybody has that, it's natural! You are not a robot!

Let me put an 'older' spin on this. When my children were younger, I did the soccer, dance, Scouts, etc... thing, and running/cycling were secondary. I didn't post very good times, since my workouts were built around their schedules.

Now that they're grown, this time is for me and my wife. Our training schedules are first on the list. So, this may account for me getting faster as I get older. It's kind of funny, when my kids are home, they're the one's going to my races to cheer me on.

There is nothing more uplifting than having your children cheering you on when you breeze into a Transition!

I agree about the blog. It's a very motivational tool b/c other people see what you are doing and it always helps to have the encouragement and support of other people and to be somewhat accountable for your training.

Whatever you do, dont get down on yourself. Focus on the positive and do start planning. It's so much easier to get the training in if you have a set plan. Establish a routine and get eneugh sleep. When we dont get eneugh sleep or are constantly overtired, we are more likely to miss training and not take care of our bodies.

And have fun. Do this because you love it not because you have to. Make workouts enjoyable. You dont always have to kill yourself out there. Consistency breeds success. And it's only May. You dont need to be in top form right now. Just be consistent and everything will fall into place.
