Swimming in a wetsuit
Chlorine can really do a number on wet suits. Preparedness is certainly something that any triathlete will preach as in the top list of priorities, however, if it's your suit and you want to get the max life out of it, I would advise against it other than a quick swim (maybe 10-20 minutes) to get the feel of it and IMMEDIATELY use some wetsuit shampoo on it at the gym.
If the one you're using is a rental - then I would clear it with the LBS before taking it in the pool.
By the way, I DID take my wetsuit in the pool before my first race to get used to it, shampooed it immediately and have not seen any ill effects. Just be prepared for some serious "man, what a poser" looks at the gym - some people just don't get it. =-)

You will float higher make sure you kick in the water not in the air. Pool water and Lake water is the same. basically. ( We float higher in salt water).
Seeing that it is a rental..... It would be wise to try it out in the pool to adjust and feel the and difference.
Good luck
I use my Ironman wetsuit in the pool once a month just to keep the feeling. I wash it after every use and the thing is like new. The instructions provided w/ the suit say it can be used a chlorine pool, as long as it is cleaned. Salt water is actually worse for suits! I know of a few other guys who use there's in the pool regular basis and the suits are still good. One is more than a 3 years old.
Bottom line: If it's not yours, who cares!

I wouldnt worry about your lack of open water swimming. I had never really swam in open water before my first tri... at least not swimming with a purpose. Just concentrate on your form and dont let yourself get too caught up in the race excitement and take off too fast. Have fun
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Thanks all! I went in to the LBS and tried them on. It took me over 20 minutes to get into the wetsuit the first time! I had visions of being trapped in it forever. LOL. Anyway...I'm all set...it's reserved for me for that weekend, I can pick it up on Friday, and they suggested I try it out in the pool too. So, I'll have Friday/Saturday to practice/try it out and the race is Sunday. Less then 3 weeks away now...

Hi there,
I am doing my first tri in June. It will be in a small lake and all of my swimming so far has been done in a pool. It doesn't look like I will be able to try swimming in the lake before the tri.
Will I really notice that much of a difference from lake to pool? Also, I am going in tomorrow to get fitted for a wetsuit (one of the local bike shops rents them out) so I will be using a wetsuit for my tri. Should I try swimming in the pool with the wetsuit before my tri? That I think I can manage but I don't know if I should really push for it to happen.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Lisa
