Cycling in the rain?

Any guidance on cycling in the rain? I'm scheduled to compete in a duathlon this weekend (only my second multi-sport event, having done the same race last year). I've done plenty of road races in the rain before so the running doesn't bother me, but I'm seriously considering pulling out if the weather forecasters are right and it's raining on Sunday morning. The course is very hilly and not closed to traffic, so I'm very nervous about wiping out, crashing, getting hurt, dying, etc.... Thoughts on how others have handled this? Am I a wimp to pull out and just do the "race" in the gym the way another Trifueler did a few weeks ago?

Do whatever you are comfortable with. I find it not to be as sketchy as you might think. Just throw on a vest or a jacket to keep warm, go easy on the corners, and if you want go soft on you tire pressure 90-100, it might slow you a little, but better traction in the wet. Good luck- bigmatt

I agree with BigMatt. Wet roads can be intimidating but take your time, be a little more cautious in the turns and consider lowering the tire pressure to increase the tires contact with the road.

Above all, do what you're comfortable with. And remember that you're not a wimp for riding in the rain. That may just mean you have more sense than the rest of us.

You might not have a choice, sometimes race directors get skittish too. The rain will be a limiter for everyone, it's just that some don't realize it :) Good advice from the others. Do what you're comfortable with.

If you have a chance before the race, find a rainy day and go for a ride. Get accustomed to the uncomfortable. It's actually not that bad. I ride to work in the rain on my old racer bike from the 80's. Just make sure you ride straight over painted surfaces. Better yet, avoid painted surfaces. :)

Good luck, be safe.

Hills and rain can be intimidating. Mostly you need to rely on your handling skills. Best not to be too aggressive. Also might want to swap out your tires for some that actually have some tread on them. Again it'll slow you down a bit, but should have a better grip.

Thanks all for the great advice. I really appreciate all of the guidance you've given - will let you know how it goes tomorrow!

To answer your question, tcrunner, not really sure....maybe fear and lack of time to devote to training. But, I think I might have been bitten by the bug (thanks in large part to lurking and then finally participating ono this website). After the du tomorrow, I am registered for my first to sprints in Aug and Sep, and will close the season with the Marine Corps Marathon (my 3rd) in Oct. And so it begins...!
