Staying Motivated...
I have constant up and down weeks it seems... one thing that helped was having a training buddy. We knew the other was waiting for us and we'd get out there and go. I need to get back into that pattern...
Include a couple sprints and/or olympic races for your summer.
That ought to help with the motivation.

depending on how much your are doing in your 'on' weeks, your body might actually need the rest. staying motivated is a strange thing. one day you're on fire about it, the next you can walk away from it. i think the important thing to remember about this sport is what it's providing you as a whole person. is it challenging you? what were you like before you started this road?
sometimes the 'down' weeks are great places to reflect on why you're doing what you're doing. enjoy the break. it's hard to live with that nagging feeling in the back of the head that says "You're slacking! you're not doing enough!" but let the OCD sit awhile, and let your body rebuild itself. the people that can train for hours on end, for days on end, have a tremendous base under them, for the rest of us, these times that look like down weeks, are more than likely, a physiologically imposed recovery week :)

I find racing to be a great motivator. The last thing I want to do it embarrass myself at a race. I train almost exclusively in the mornings so when I am lying in bed and having a difficult time getting up,I just think of the next race.
The other thing is to get into a routine. I get up between 4:30 and 5:00 each morning whether I am training or not (though there are not to many days of no training whne trying to squeeze in 3 events). If I blow off my morning workout and just try to do it in the evening, all too often I just skip it.
The more consistent you are, the easier it will be to stay motivated

I keep myself motivated by placing my latest race results on the bedside table along with places I think I can improve on. I then challenge myself to lower my time in my next race by working harder.
For example I just finished the Gulf Coast Half this past weekend. Swim 33:40, Bike 2:49 (20 mph) and Run 2:24 (11 min miles). I put this info on a sheet of paper next to my bed with a note saying "work on nutrition during the bike and get your run time down you are too slow".
This lets me know what I need to do before the next race and keeps me on track.
Thanks for the replies, everyone. I think consistency in my schedule is key and something I have been without pretty much since my move to Dallas in December.
It's been hard getting settled into a groove. I think another thing I need to do is seek out a tri group. Even though I like training on my own during the week, I realize I miss the camaraderie I had with my old group in Bryan/College Station.

Hi all,
Well, I've been thinking a lot about motivation lately and I'm wondering if I'm alone in this. In general, I'm a procrastinator. I love to push things to the end then sweat it out. I love that feeling of being under pressure.
I found myself doing the same thing last year when training for my first half-IM. I had a pretty decent base heading into the final 8 weeks but that was really when I buckled down.
I'm targeting 2 fall half-IMs and my first full marathon in Dec. I'm having a hard time focusing right now. As in, I'll do great one week, hit all my key workouts then the next I do very little. (Granted, I've had some bike issues and just joined a gym/pool after being without one for two weeks.)
I do want to improve my times and get better. But sometimes I just lack the kick in the arse. I am starting to think this may be my limiter...really pushing myself. I've thought about getting a coach but really can't afford it right now.
Am I just being too freaky about this or do you find yourself in the same motivational rut? I'm just amazed by people who can go hard week in and week out even when their race is months away.
