Swim Suit
I blew through a few tri shorts for training before I figured out NOT to wear them in the pool. I used Tyr for the first few until I discovered (yes, I discovered them) Pearl Izumi tri shorts - MAN THEY'RE GREAT! Best fitting short that I've found for me - bar none.
Now, I wear speedo jammers (just above the kneee like a compression short) that are great and incredibly chlorine resistant. I would get about 5 weeks top out of a pair of tri shorts (unfortunately, the PI was terrible in the pool) before they just (literally) fell apart. My current Speedos have been through 3 swims a week for about the past 6 weeks and look brand new - no signs of wear at all.

NYFan21 - I'm not sure if you are asking what we train in or what we compete in. For me, I train wearing a typical speedo with a speedo drag suit. To compete I wear TYR tri shorts.
Virtuace - To help preserve the length of whatever you wear in the pool, make sure you rinse the suit or shorts thoroughly in cold water right after using them. Also, do not wring your suits dry. The best way is to just let them air dry completely, but this often results in carrying dripping wet suits out of the gym with you, so lightly wringing some water is acceptable. I never weare jammers or tri shorts to train in, so I can't exactly tell you how long they should last, but I swim 3-4 times a week, wearing the same exact suits every time and I can get about 2-3 months out of my suits. (drag suits last longer, as they are made of nylon and are very resistant to stretching, chlorine, etc.)
anybody want to post the EBAY link :) lol

Thanks
