I just finished my first 1/2IM this weekend (Gulf Coast Triathlon) and am training for my first full IM late June (IM Couer deAlene). I did GulfCoast in 6:21:00 and was wondering what the conventional-wisdom is about extrapolating from recent 1/2IM time to full IM time? (To set my expectations and pace myself correctly for the full.)

Of course these are two very differant venues. Gulf Coast was flat as a pancake and HOT. IMCDA is very hilly and (we all pray) not nearly so hot (especially late afternoon and evening during the run).

Rod, I cannot offer you any math but I'll see you in 47 days 17 hours!

I'm not sure how true this is but a friend in my old tri group (who did IMFL last year) told me that you can usually double your half-IM time then add an hour.

That proved about right for him from his time at Buffalo Springs to IMFL. So for me, that'd be praying I'd squeak in before they shut down the course! ;)

I did GC as a way to see how i needed to be preparing for Great Floridian - 166 days - in looking at how i raced i figure i can take 15-20 minutes off my time - better hydration and no quad lock ups - don't get lost on the swim course - anybody seen Destin? and add 2 mph to my bike (19) at GC - and continuing to get stronger - i'm looking to take my 6:15 time to 11 hours for the IM by October

Yeah, I think times are somewhat unpredictable sometimes given the factors that contribute...weather, nutrition, equipment malfunctions.

Of course it's good to have goals, but not at the expense of having fun! I mean, afterall, you are doing something a lot of people won't even attempt! :)
