Anything old school FUNK... but basically, I love to listen to KC & the Sunshine Band before a race.

Rufus and Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman"

I like Metallica, Where I May Roam, my personal favorite, but I'm going to try a new plan. That stuff gets me to hyped up, great for indoor trainer sessions, but I go out to tough with that death metal in my brain. Going to go with some relaxing tunes before Lake Placid. I think I'll rock some Roots!

I think the pre race music preferance would be directly related to race distance. Sprints and Olys are short enough to start out pumped. IM, however, I would prolly just listen to my ritualistic last song before taking off, everything else would be a little lighter.

You know the problem, everybody is so juiced that it tends to rub off on everyone. My new plan is to mellow out a little and try and focus on my race objectives (as if there not enough time when the gun goes off) use the headphones to keep my attention away from all the hype and on what I need to dp.

I have one special song for every event. I listen to it before any workout related to this special race.
For my last duathlon this was Morricone's "Ecstasy of Gold".
A few more songs I like to listen to pre-race:
Wagner: Ride of the Valkyries
Sepultura: Roots Bloody Roots
Metallica: Whiplash
Seek and Destroy
Master of Puppets
Offspring: Nitro, Neocon
System of a Down: KITT
AC/DC: Hard as a rock, Long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll
Motörhead: Built for speed
Iron Maiden: Be quick or be dead (very inspirational)
and some Disturbed and Slayer.
And then get it going...

The top three songs to finish off a run with a killer sprint: (These have been scientifically proven to make you run faster)

1.) Wake Up---Rage Against the Machine
2.) Mofo---U2
3.) Thunderstruck---AC/DC

Anything fast from the 80's. Scandal (Goodbye to You), fast Bonnie Tyler, The Hooters (And we Danced), some fast country, like John Michael Montgomery., and the ever important Paradise by the Dashboard Light. (8 minute song so it makes the time pass fast.)

i would have to go with some SAOSIN, Thursday, Anatomy of a Ghost, Coheed and Cambria, Underoath, or Anatomy of You. Something with some emotion and a little screaming.

Hmmm... don't you find that sometimes you need to be pumped up and sometimes you need to chill out before a race?
When i rowed i was often in need of some chilled out stuff, that's where Coldplay, U2 and such like came in, especially if it was a big race (nationals or an international race/trials). These days i find i fo need a bit of help with getting the adrenaline flwoing so listen to faster stuff.
All time best:

Eminem - Lose yourself

What do the pros listen to??
I just know Lance: Led Zeppelin. And Judith Arndt, the german female cyclist, listens to Eminem before time trials.
There are some playlists on the net, but you have to buy the songs, so I were not able to get them. I do not even have the tool to downlaod the songs. Anybody out there knowing the content??
It were some pro triathletes, so I thought it might be interesting.
"escapeartist Hmmm... don't you find that sometimes you need to be pumped up and sometimes you need to chill out before a race?"
That is exactly what I need. It leads my focus to racing and giving my best.
Pre-Race I now incorporated the routine: Ecstasy of Gold, Master of Puppets. Both from Metallica's S&M album. It works really great.

crossfade, 12 stones, submerssed..anything hard and fast to get me going. My intent is to have the song stuck in my head through out the race. ironically during my last Half ironman, I had Kelly Clarksons "Since you've been gone" stuck in my head during the WHOLE race. Dont ask me how that happened......

For those of us with toddlers, it's always something along the lines of B-I-N-G-O and Old MacDonald. Gets old but if you can manage to sing these tunes while passing on the bike it is demoralizing to your opponents.

I've heard the song so many times I groan and change it when it comes on. And i LOVE GNR, so thats sad. I stand by Seek and Destroy as the ultimate, followed by Dope's Burn and NIN's Sin. Sin is WICKED.

Brett, I think "I'm picking up a baby bumblebee, won't my..." approaches a 90 rpm cadence too. : )
