I think if you obsess over the sport and your performance than you're a trigeek. I wouldn't say it's related to number of races. golf geeks, basketball geeks, etc. don't necessarily play in tournaments, they just love the sport.

maybe just hanging out here is enough :)

I mean it's cool that you really, really, really wannabee a tri-geek, but come on! You don't get to call yourself an Ironman just because you really, really, really wannabee one. You have to do it.

if you can't swim, you can't play.

as to how many you need to do to qualify as a tri-geek, I'd say, one. But you have to really, really want it.
