Injury blues...

I'm off to my doctors office this afternoon... my lower left abdomen, I guess near my groin I noticed was abit tender last night when one of my kids jumped up on my lap... I felt a small lump and kinda freaked out... then after talking with a couple of people they said it sounded like a hernia... maybe an inguinal hernia. Called the doc this am and have an appointment this afternoon - good news - if it is a hernia -it's fixable - bad news - I'll miss racing in the next month or two and then probably will lose fitness due to rest needs... and won't be anywhere near where I expected to be by August.

I think this is my worst nightmare - well maybe not - but it stinks anyway!

Of course - misery enjoys company - anyone else on the injured list??

i thought i had a hernia a couple years ago .. but my psoais (sp) was tight. it felt like a pain right in that area , really deep. i went to see a sports med doctor and he thought it was deep impacted hernia or something like that... but my massge threapist fixed me up ! you could hve a hernia though so get it checked out ...

I pulled a groin muscle in early January that I orginally thought might be a hernia. At least you are smart enough to go to the doctor as I waited way to long and now I am still recovering all of these months later.

If it turns out to be a groin injury, get to a specialist as soon as possible. As I discovered, groin injuries are difficult to diagnose. Mine was actually related to tightness in my hips and now have a stretching routine that has lessoned that pressure.

Your injury doesn't sound like a groin injury but I wanted to chime in just in case.

Good luck wth your recovery.

A week ago tomorrow I had a CT Scan to check for a hernia... still waiting on results. At least it didn't bug me too much during IM AZ (it tends not to bother me once I'm in workout zone -- except for some pukey feeling sometimes) and my big planned race for the year is done...

I hope that it isnt anything too serious...sounds like you are still able to train a bit so that is good as long as it doesnt get worse. I however am on the injured list  :( since early march. I havent been able to run in awhile. Being injured is a very frustrating feeling...when all you want to do is plan on training for a race but cant because you have no idea when you will be back at it again. I have been on the bike a lot but certainly does not make up for the lack of running. Well good luck with your injury hope it isnt anything to keep you on the sidelines!

My running partner thought he pulled a groin about 4 months ago. He layed off the running for a while and was treating his "groin pull". When it didn't go away, he went to the dr who sent him to the pt and he has something called piriformis syndrome. It has something to do with the ligaments and nerves that run through your glutes (near the sciatic nerve). Anyway, a little aggressive pt, LOTS of stretching and new shoes and he's back on track.

Hopefully your injury is something that is treatable and recovery time will be short - good luck ;)

Well,

Back from the doc's office with good and bad news.

Good news - no pulled groin :)

Bad news - They suspect shingles -

I guess it still kinda freaks me out - and I have to admit I'm surprised I'm telling you this... but maybe it will help someone else out down the road - you've all helped me in the past...

I had just finished a tough three week build and did some pretty intense training - toughest yet this year. I was right in the middle of a recovery week when I developed a cold and then a couple of symptoms that I hadn't really put together. I guess stress or illness or weakened immune systems can cause an outbreak - maybe even over-training.

About the time I developed my cold I also experienced this strange "numb" feeling in my left "love handle."

It lasted for a couple of days and then went away... I thought I had pinched a nerve doing a few lunges or something.

During my exam today my doc told me my "lump in my groin" was actually my lymph nodes swelling. It was only on my left side - the same side that I felt the numb feeling. Also, she noted a few small red spots that I thought were ingrown hairs. She is running some blood tests to make sure that there isn't something else compromising my immune system - but she felt pretty good that I had a case of the shingles. She indicated that I could exercise as much as I could take it - but should err on the easy side until this subsides. I'm on a antiviral med and hopefully with some rest this thing will work itself out over the next week. I guess acting early on these things is a good thing. I don't have to ask for refunds on my scheduled races!

Any body have any experience with this besides our childhood cases of chickenpox?

Thanks for the mojo!

I've got to tell you that I think I'm pretty lucky... I have two mosquito-bit size irritations on my 'love handle' and they don't hurt very much. I did a little searching and I was pretty grossed out by how bad it can get. I'm glad I caught it early. I'm really in no pain - other than my gland is a little swollen near my groin on my left side and I feel that I can continue to train without any problems or pain - though I'm a bit nervous to go hard.

I read this story about professional triathlete Joanna Lawn who suffered a case of this just before Ironman New Zealand a year or two ago.

http://www.ironman.co.nz/view_news.cfm?id=415&year=2004

It makes sense that as I move into harder training - perhaps I over trained a bit and increased volume and/or intensity to quickly. I suffer from allergies so I was also feeling a bit run down as well. Working full time, coaching little league, and trying to manage training is hard - then throw in a few deadlines and some spring yard work and voila...

Good luck with your surgery and recovery! Benefit of living in California are the late season (fall) tri's. Unfortunately we don't have very many late season tri's due to seasonal water temps in November are pretty cool...

Thanks again for the motivation.... the real beauty of forums like this...
