Hi! I don't know if there is already a thread like this but I was just curious to know if anyone wanted to share their pre-race "rituals"? Not so much the technical stuff or the nutrition, more of the mental stuff -- for instance do you listen to a special song, have a mantra you say to yourself, etc?

Thought it might be a fun topic.

the only thing i do is put my goggles around my neck as soon as i get up ... because it never fails if i dont do that i forget them and i have to buy a new pair at the race. always !

Usually in the car on my way to the race I play some sort of really upbeat music and sing along just to help wake myself up and get the blood flowing. Admittedly, the last two races I entered that music was the soundtrack from the ABBA musical "Mamma Mia". Not saying I have the best taste....just that I'm looking for happy peppy music!

i guess i am kinda weird. i like everything quite so i can just remain in a calm state and not get nervous. i guess you can say i like to get in a zone. i've only done one tri and that worked for me but i do it before any kind of game or whatever.

I go through and visualize the whole race, I started doing that when I swam competitively and it just got me into a great mind set.

(happy music didn't hurt either) :)

For race day, get up early, and eat a plain bagel with real butter and a can of Diet Pepsi. On the drive to the start, I put on my 'Racing' CD, a mix CD with songs like "Radar Love" and "Can't Drive 55", you get the drift.

I have a ritual on laying out my gear in the transition area, rack the bike, helmet on the bike, fill the water bottle, layout the towel under the front tire, then clip the shoes in.

Then it's off to lie down in the shade until 15 minutes before the start, then I get up and run for 10 minutes, then find my spot at the start.

Bagel, OJ, orange, bannana, Gatorade. In that order for breakfast. My pre race music in the car is Metallica- Kill Em All. "Seek and Destroy" is the last song I listen to before party time. Thats pretty much it as far as rituals for me. That is like a trigger, I do that, my body knows its gonna race.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Hmmm.... Well, I paint my toenails the night before every race. Started the tradition a couple of years ago.

That's about it for mental; the rest is basic nutrition, packing, etc. And I'm still tweaking/improving all of those, so I can't really call them rituals.

Though, I have yet to have a race this year where I didn't forget something or have a mechanical failure on my bike right before the race. So I guess you could call PANIC PANIC PANIC my race ritual! :)

Whatever it takes to put myself into the best mood possible because i know I'm going to get to the race and meet a bunch of great new people. That’s one of my favorite things about the sport, the new people. Everyone's got such a positive attitude and the overall vibe race day something only someone racing can understand. Standard things I've done to get locked into that good mood.......
Solid head to toe packing the night before so I’m not worried about forgetting stuff in the morning.
Getting up and getting there super early.....self admitted morning person
Nothing to angry or to mellow on the stereo...music i wish i could play in front of 20,000 people
Smile on my face and a good morning to everyone i see

I have my 1st tri this july and have been training since Feb. I have so many ?'s. How does the transition work?what should I wear? What should I eat that morning?I get side aches alot, how do I make sure I don't get one? And the part I'm most worried about is the swimming. I'm afraid I get swam over. Anyone have any tips, answers or advice. I've got great motivation, I'm racing for a fundraiser,my brother in law has ALS so we're raising money for research and that has been my motivation for training and finishing the race.
