I can only swim 50 meters untill i feel i have to flip over and slow down my breathing. I really want to attempt a triathlon but dont know what i am doing wrong. I know that if you throw me a snorkel I can go on for the full 1k. I can breath from the side for a while but I dont feel I am getting enough air. Any time I pull my head up from the front I get enough air but then I am scolded from the old folk that critique all the youngns. If it all fails then I'll probably have to back stroke the whole thing just to get past the swim. Please help.

You may want to pratice kicking on each side, by doing this it will help you get use to rythmic breathing and will also allow you more time to do so. I usually count to 6 take one stroke and then do the same on the other side.

Hope this helps!!

Also make sure you are exhaling under the water. Don't hold your breath in between breaths while swimming, maintain a steady inhale/exhale routine. This allows you to comfortably inhale each time you turn your head and not have to worry about exhaling and inhaling in the short amount of time you turn your head to breathe.

Also, I agree with TRI21, practice your body roll and gaining comfort on your side. This will place less stress on your neck and shoulders each time you turn to take a breath and hopefully will allow you to get a deeper breath each time.

Are you going too fast? IT might be helpful to slow down your stroke a little. You could be swimming too fast and expending too much energy for a long swim. What are your times for 50's? Keep practicing and spending time in the pool. The more you practice, the farther you will find yourself being able to go. I have swam my entire life, but only recently picked up long distance swimming. The first time in the pool and couldn't do more than a 100 without having to flip to the breaststroke. Now, i can swim over a mile!! Mainly i just had to SLOW DOWN and remember this was a distance race and not a sprint.
