for those of you who have switched from 2 swims/wk to 3 swims/wk...

for a first time HIM, i am going to use a training plan that has 3 swims a week. they start around 1500yds per session and build in week 17 to about 3000 before tapering off

i have only done 2 swims a week in the past, and i think i am capable of doing more volume than the plan shows by adding this third swim. past swim sessions for me have peaked at 3500 yds

should i stick to the allotted workouts with the lower yardage?

i do not want to overtrain. it just doesn't look like much on paper as i look at it here in the off season...

thanks up front!

I wouldn't worry too much about overtraining if you're only going to add about 1500 yds. So at peak you'll basically be training for an extra half hour or so, like if you decided to add an extra couple run miles or like 10 bike miles. It probably isn't going to push you over the edge into overtraining.

trying not to make the post too long...I probably should have added that whole week jumps from 6x/wk to 9x/wk. swims and runs are together on three days with cycling on the other three

i guess i'm wondering if there will be a compound effect from the other training that i should be wary of

I don't think you have to worry about over training with the distances you mentioned and the period of time you are building. What distance race are you training for?

I've always felt that the swim is almost completely separate from bike/run training. I'll be careful about how I plan my bike and run around each other to avoid injury, but I can swim pretty much whenever, no matter what I did on the bike or running that day. I'd go with the hardest swim plan that you have time to do.

HIM, it's really not much different from the Oly's I'm used to...

I am the same. I am now around 5x week. Swimming you can do everyday pretty much with no worries.
