Bib Shorts?

so umm what gives with bib shorts? As far as I can tell they don't have any advantage over normal biking shorts yet suffer from a major drawback, same as single piece tri suits, makes it hard to go to the bathroom. What am I missing?

One big thing is that you only need one piece of clothing. I think the biggest thing is that there isn't nearly as much pressure on your midsection from the waistband on the bike shorts. I've never used bibs, but I can imaging it's a lot more comfortable. I think that's the main reason though. Please, someone correct me or reaffirm.

Chunky is on the money. Once you have worn bibs they are so much more comfy. there is no constriction AT ALL around the mid section. They fit to your body better than shorts and are just a much better cycling expierence

i was once told "once you go to bibs you will never go back to shorts" i did not believe this because i was totally happy with my cycling shorts. however, i purchased a pair of bibs on sale just for kicks and literally have never worn my shorts again. they are more comfortable, stay in place better, and really do end up giving me a more enjoyable experience on the bike. as with anything you get what you pay for, so if you want to buy bibs get the best ones you can afford. i love my giordana shorts, feel like a ferrari for my, well, you know where.

+1 for the bibshorts.

I'm also a total convert. They fit better, feel better, and give you that warm fuzzy feeling. My regular shorts only get used if all the bibs are in the washing machine. If they haven't hit the machine yet, I'll sooner take a dirty pair of bibs over a clean pair of regulars.

That's pretty good praise. I'll be trying out the bibs soon.

But what about having to pee? Any tricks to getting the job done before a car drives by?

Buy a pair with an extra absorbent pad.:D

Sorry, I just didn't have a good serious suggestion.

They're stretchier than you think. Peeing isn't a problem. :D

I can't fib...gotta love the bib!
They are useless for tri's. I prefer two piece. For biking however....so much more comfy....especially on looooong rides when every seam has teeth and the waist band is lined with glass.

Can't think of the last time I had to actually expose myself to "go."
I just ...go!
(I know there is a "peeing on the bike" thread here that we beat yearly like a dead horse...)

I save my peeing while moving for race day. Especially since there are so many bathrooms along my regular routes.

YES--and even if there isn't , I am ok with peeing on the side of the road as most of my long rides are out in the country areas.

What the heck am I missing here--are bib shorts for GUYS???
I have to say, my shorts never bother me at all, so not sure what the deal is

I agree, I have never riden in bib shorts so maybe if I tried them out I would have a different opinion, but after a long bike ride, it is not my shorts that are causing pain. It is that knife blade I have been sitting on for over 3 hours.

My shorts don't really bother me either, but Mike says the bib kind is nice sometimes since they do stay in place a bit better and avoid any pressure at all on your waist. However, I haven't seen many (any) made for women... I have a couple *ahem* things (we need a "boobs" sound for that) that would make the straps more uncomfortable than regular shorts.

Well ya learn something new every day. I would think the straps would get in the way of dropping them tho if you DO have to pee (for us girls that is). Hmmm ...Think I will stick to my tri shorts. I personally (as I have said on other threads) prefer them to bike shorts because they have a smaller pad even on longer rides.

yeah I prefer a bit of pressure on my waist to having to deal with more straps and such over my chest -- sports bras already take over that area  And like you Britt I mostly ride in tri shorts anyways :)
