So... Im currently using a POLAR HR monitor with a footpod for distance/speed readings.... I'd love to not have to wear a HR strap and not have to use a footpod. My brother uses a Garmin 305 and swears by it. What do you all thinK???? My only issue is that it seems BIG.

Which Polar watch do you have? If it is RS800 then you can get the GPS sensor. It is somewhat bulky, but works quite well - according to my Garmin using friends in a similar way as Forerunner for the speed and distance. You can put it away when you are done running and use the watch as normal day time watch.

Other GPS sensors for running I know are:
Garmin Forerunner 305 and 205
Timex has GPS system
Polar has the G3 sensor for RS800

and that is all I know. Garmin is bulky watch and can be used for running only. Timex and Polar are modular - e.g. the sensor goes on your arm.

You can check out the review of G3 sensor I posted few days ago on my website: http://runtotri.blogspot.com/2007/11/user-review-of-polar-g3-sensor-for.html

I've had a Polar S625X for the past year and it worked great for the bike and run. I purchased the additional foot pod and cycling sensor. Lots of dough in the end. I never used it for the swim as I didn't want to tempt fate with such a pricey toy and the chest strap was never able to really stay in place anyway.

The Polar has disappeared into a black hole. I think it may have fallen out of my bag in the parking lot and is now bling-bling for some area teen.

I'm picking up a Garmin Forerunner 305 at Costco today (sale...plus PowerBar is offering a $50 rebate until the end of the month). From what I've researched here and other Net forums, it seems to be highly rated. I can't see why it won't work on the bike if all you want is HR, speed and distance.

I think the Garmin 305 sale is only online for Costco -- I've heard almost all their GPS stuff is online only.

I have the Garmin 301 (model before the 305) and love it. Actually I have 3 of them and love them all ;) -- I've got my boyfriend liking training with it, too.

You will have to wear a heart rate strap for any of the heart rate monitors that are really useful -- there is currently no monitor that gives continuous readings without the strap.

Kylie's correct. The deals are only at Costco.com and it's selling for $175. Throw in the PowerBar rebate for another $50 and you get a smokin' deal of $129.

I went to Costco because it was close to my errands today and wanted to see if I could weasel the discount there. Alas, no go. Not even a sense of humor about the subject as I tried to be my charming best.

You can definitely use the Garmin on the bike. It adjusts to bike mode with the push of a button. I love my 305-never ever get a false reading of 200 bpm. I highly recommend it. $129 is a great deal-I'm envious of whoever gets it for this price!

Set goals...... but be here now. Enjoy the ride to the finish line.

The Foerunner 305 works great on the bike. There's a separate cadence/speed sensor and a very cool bike mount kit that makes transfer from wrist to bike very smooth. Although bulky, no issue while training, in fact I appreciate its size now for the easy to read displays.

To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!

My wife got me the Garmin 305 for my birthday a couple of months ago and I love it. She got it from Amazon, but not for the low low price of what you can get somewhere else. If you can get it for less somewhere else cool.

I have the 305 and use it with my mac. Garmin has a Training Center that is a mac version.

Also I mainly use mine with motionbased.com, which I believe now works both Mac and PC as well.

A few points. I just got a forerunner 305, and got the speed/cadence sensor, and the bike mount. I absolutely love it. You will still have to wear a chest strap if you want heart rate, but no foot pod.

The cadence/speed sensor is really nice. It's takes a little doing to get it close enough to the crank and the rear wheel, but it works like a champ. It's especially nice to have speed and cadence if you're training inside. It will still use GPS when you ride outside for speed, but if you're in a tunnel or riding inside or something, it will still have your speed.

The quick release bike mount is perfect for triathletes. The only thing I don't like about it is the fabric strap. I can see it getting really stinky really soon. But it's cool to be able to go from wrist to bike very fast.

I love it so far. It gives me all the info I could ever want (not power) and it seems to be very accurate. I can even tell what side of the street I'm on on the maps. The elevation isn't totally accurate, but it shows good trends. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

If you're looking for some great software for the mac, check out Ascent. It's a ton better than the training center software. I've tried motionbased, but I don't like it a lot because of the unbearably slow upload speeds. Just my $0.02.

I have the garmin with cadence and speed and I like it except for the fact that you can't swim with it. The unit and the chest strap are only good for 1 meter for 30 minutes. I'm still trying to figure out how I am going to use it for racing. Probably going to leave it on my bike and just wear another heart rate monitor while I am racing.

I am soooo old school.

I have a Timex Ironman watch - 1998 Kona 20th anniversary special - no hrm, no gps, not even a bike computer.

Check out this link. It's a pretty good guide on how to swim with the forerunner. I haven't tried, but I think I will next year.

In addition to the swimming post, I also just wrote up an in depth review of the 305 - that covers more of the software options out there for it and how to best use them (more than the hardware itself). I posted it Sunday to my blog:

Dont' forget the $50 rebate that expires this Friday!
