Gradual bike build
What sort of workouts are you doing on the bike?
5-6 hours a week should be plenty to get your speed up there. I would recomend some longer rides 6-7hrs approaching an IM (I assume that is what you are building to).
During the winter you should focus on building power, technique.
one leg drills, intervals pushing a big gear, spin-ups. . .
I wouldn't give up the other sports for cycling. It may be beneficial to do a big cycling month,(say dec.) then do a big swimming month, and a big running month.

I have my eye on IMFL 09 Life stuff permitting.
Right now I am just trying to be consistent on getting in 4-5 bike sessions a week avg around 16-17 mph and up that in a couple months. I'm not real technical concerning bike workouts ... just basically know I need to put in more time.
I will try to incorporate some of these workouts and the "Big Month" concepts.
Thanks for your input!

I think you are going to struggle trying to develop the fitness to be able to ride a 6hr IM bike leg on on 5-6 hrs PW bike training.
Think about it, your devoting your whole weekly bike training to the same time you would like to ride an IM bike leg in. it's not going to happen and even if your were able to ride a 6hr IM bike leg it will really leave you feeling pretty knackered for the run.
If your serious about doing an IM you need to buckle down and get serious about your bike training.
As a starting point I would look at doubling those hours and work towards putting toegther consistent 8-10hr week on the bike. Regardless of intensity, intervals etc, Just get used to finding 8-10hrs week that you can fit in with your schedule and then you'll be well on your way to averaging around 18/19mph on the bike in an IM comfortably enough to then be able to run to your potential.

How much time a week can you dedicate to training?

My primary goal this year is to build my bike endurance.
I am considering just swimming once a week (long) and reduce my running to just two days a week ( one moderate and another long ) to spend more of my limited time on the bike ... mostly on the trainer. I hope to be able to get in about 5-6 hours per week on the bike.
I would like to be able to avg 18/19 mph for 112 miles a year from now and not be entirely spent.
Does this approach make any sense ?
Thanks!
