Hip Pain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've had some hip issues in the past and it was usually overuse related. How many miles per week are you running? Have you increased mileage recently by more than 10% per week. It could be any number of reasons: shoes not right for your gait, constant pavement pounding, length of stride, weak back muscles, etc.
You'll probably have to try different things to zero in on it: shortening your stride, switch running surfaces, hit the trails. Go to your local running store and have them suggest shoes that best suit your running style and as always, work on core strength, abdominal and lower back exercises.
I also found this online, pain in only one of your hips may be either an uneven pelvis or unequal leg lengths. hmmmm....
Whatever the cause, proceed slowly, stop when there's pain and see a doc if it persists.
Good luck.

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
I also had hip issues - went to the physio and guess what -most hip issues are back related, specifically weak lower back muscles. As cayman mentioned, core strenght and lower back strenght will help. I have been doing much more than previously and haven't felt much pain in the hip (mine was right on the hip bone) - work more on core and lower back (planks, back extensions, glute bridges, pelvic tilts, ball crunches, etc) - if its debillating get to a Dr soon.

I wear about 12 lbs of gear around my waist everyday at work. My lower back is always killing me. I guess I can try a few things...
1) Doc
2) Running store
3) Switch from pavement to trails (temporarily)
4) Lower back strength building workouts at the gym/homeThanks guys!!!!!
Also tight iliopsoas - My physio also had me doing long deep streches of the iliopsoas each day, especially after each run, no twisting just straight stretches - the thought behind it was the tight iliopsoas caused my itb to tighten and track over my hip bursa, casuing inflammation. The iliopsoas were making up for my back and core muscles tiring on my long runs. One thing leads to another.
Try this stretch - hold for longer than you would normally.

Hey Gwen,
I had some serious hip problems a few years, that pretty much stopped me from walking for a few days. From your description it sounds similar. I too carried a ton of stuff too and from work. I also sat through out the day in a position that aggravated it. After 1 year of physical therapy I was running again and shortly after that doing 1/2 marathons and olympic tris.
1. could be a muscle imbalance. Are your hamstrings are very tight?
2. Change what you get carry to work. I am very careful now, and take out all excess in weight in my bag, extra papers and such. And bought some lighter stuff.
3. Go to an Orthopaedic doctor, and get a physical therapist
4. Also check out ChiRunning by Dreyer
You need to get yourself to a doctor that practices A.R.T. - active release technique. It's basically a chiropractic technique for soft tissue.
I developed hip pain from running on uneven surfaces and muscle imbalance. It was so bad I could barely walk, let alone run. I couldn't sit at work, I could sleep at night, it got so bad I couldn't even ride my bike and it hurt to kick while swimming. And nothing I did (ice, heat, stretching, rest, etc) fixed it.
After 3 visits to the A.R.T. doctor, I was able to run pain-free! The doctor also worked with me to devlop a streching and strengthing program to correct my muscle imbalances (which I do every day). The best part was that the doctor understood that I am a triathlete and she worked to get me active again instead of telling me stay off it for a month and take this bunch of pills.
Hope this helps!

Thanks...I'm going to try all those suggestions.
I went to my primary today and all she did was give me an RX for an X-Ray. Then possible PT????
I had a sports massage today which helped a tad with the hip issue. The therapist said I had horribly knotted shoulders and could tell I do a lot of biking. LOL
I'll try the stretches, thanks.
I will have to find an ART doc...not sure if I can get coverage for that.
I can't change the load on what I carry every day at work. I need my gun, radio, spray, ect...its required....*yawn*
Thanks for the tips...Let u know what happens

Thanks. I went on the website and found a few local providers. About $40 a session is the average price since my health insurance will not cover it. Sounds promising. Much appreciated!
how bad is the pain? is it sore or like hurts to run that u wanna stop? i would try to improve flexibility in that area and maybe cross train until the pain goes away. try to improve ur swim and bike times then get back to running.

The pain is bad when I run. It starts to really kick into full gear around mile 4. It is starting to bother me while sitting at work too.
I swim 3 times a week, bike training is over because of the crappy PA weather. I was hoping on improving my running during the cold weather. I really needed a few solid months of run training this off season. I doubt I can move into a HIM unless I have a good base this winter.
I'm going to try the ART and see how it goes.
okay good luck i hope it is nothing serious.

My insurance didn't cover it either but it was worth the $120 because my hip was back to normal quickly. I hope it works well for you, I know how frustrating it is to get vauge answers from your primary doctor.

Had the first session of ART today. Was a little painful, nothing awful. I have another session Friday. I'll keep you all updated on the progress....

I posted this on another forum, but I'm looking for as much advice as I can get.
Recently, I have been experiencing sharp pain in my right hip while running. The pain is on the outside of my hip and feels almost 'inside' my hip?
This usually starts after mile 3.5-4 and lasts untill I finish my run. ( Most often stopping the run )
I have tried stretching, warming up, advil, ice, heat, icyhot, alternative activities, running on level ground, buying new sneakers...Nothing works.
Short of sitting on my ass untill Jan 1st, what can I do to stop the pain? Anyone ever have this type of pain and overcome it??
Thanks!
