Hi All,

I just signed on for my first Half Iron in July 2008, prepressured! I've been "TRI-ing" for 2 years, sprint distance only. I've seen 20 week training plans, but what should I be doing now? Building base, comfortable pace, strength training? I feel if I don't have a plan of attack, I'll chicken out!! Any help appreciated!:)

Right now, leading up to the start of your twenty week plan you should be doing workouts while keeping your heart rate low. Make sure that you have built yourself up to where you can comfortable do the length or distances of workouts that the beginning of your training plan calls for.

For your workouts you should be more concerned about getting distance in than speed. When you go out on a run, don't try to set a PR for that distance when you are running it. When you go on a bike ride, ride at a pace where your heart rate stays low and just try to put miles on your legs.

^what he said...

also, use the training log, if you're not already. it will help you track progress and build confidence in your accomplishments. it also is a daily reminder to be consistent in getting your workouts in. another anxiety-inducing feature is the ability to plug in your race dates and it gives you the countdown in weeks and days...once you see you've ONLY got 33 weeks to go, you'll definitely put in today's workout!

I am in a similar situation. I have only ever done Sprint Tri's and this summer I am attempting not only my first OLY ( June ), but my first HIM (Oct). Not sure how to move on from here....

Gwen, that seems like plenty of time to hit both of those with enough training. Take a look at these plans if you haven't already. Get Mr. Friel's book from the library and read it cover to cover (but use the more generic plan from Trifuel; Joe Friel's is a little over the top for folks new to training). It should give you the strategies and mindsets for when to do what kind of training.

The Friel book should be able to help with off season prep and what to focus on during the season and at what times...
