I am really excited to get back in the groove after having my son!! I have a couple of goals to accomplish this upcoming season, & wanna get help to do it the right way. I have never run a marathon & am currently training for one thats in February. I have done a sprint tri a few years ago and want to do the 1/2 ironman in May. How would you guys prepare for something like this?? As far as swimming goes....it's damn cold outside:{ The biking & running legs are not a problem at all. Anything you guys can offer would be AWESOME!!!

Thanx again!!!!!!!

There are training plans for HIM's here on trifuel and in books easily found at book stores. I would recommend getting one and following it in order to be prepared for the race in May.

As far as swimming goes, do you belong to a gym that has a pool? If not, I would suggest joining one to get the necessary amount of swim training in.

I'm pretty new to this as well (the triathlon part ;-) ) and the swimming piece seems to be the odd sport out in the off season. I have read alot of posts that indicate that swimming is the easiest in the off season and I can only assume that they have memberships to covered swimming facilities or live in very warm climates. Personally I am weighing my options between just focusing on running and cycling in the colder months to build a solid core and pick up the swimming in the spring or getting a pool membership as an Xmas gift and balancing my workouts during the colder months (I'm in SC, so in a similar climate). Based on the target of doing a HIM in May, you may need to ensure you have access to swimming facilites sooner rather than later.

Just helping kick this thread off, I'm in a similar boat wrt how to handle swim workouts in the winter months.

If you don't belong to a Y or gym with a pool, local masters groups usually offer classes and only charge for the sessions, not the hefty gym fees associated with the total facility.

check it out.

My non-scientific advise would be to try and swim at least once a week during off-season going at least 1.2 miles in your case (once every two weeks at very least). This is not really swim training but keeps some familiarity with stroke and breathing. I love to swim and time permitting would be in the pool three times/week during off season but I have to build my bike so I'll be doing the once a week minimum.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.- Paul
