Lower Back Pain
Is the pain there while you are swimming or is it there after you stop?
The only thing that I can think of is that you might be allowing you hips to sag in the water a little bit. This is put some strain on you lower back. Other than that i can't think of what it could be because swimming is usually a fairly pain free activity.
Also, do you lower back pain while biking or running, or is it only while swimming?
My lower back gets sore during swimming sometimes. I think I sometimes sag my back a bit (if that makes sense) and doing so makes the lower part ache. What changes it for me is how much I'm pushing down with my chest.

It could be lower back/core weakness. You need to keep your abs and lower back somewhat taught in order to keep your body in line because there isn't much support in the water. If you loose that you end up stressing your back.
swimming is where my back pain usually gets fixed...it's like gentle traction.
that sounds like a very odd pain...talk to a doc

Huh maybe that's why I feel it more when I'm not riding as much.

I had the same problem as you. I went to a chiropractor a couple times and that sort of helped but I found that my problem was that I was overstretching my back after training. I've actually quit stretching my back entirely and I never get any back pain anymore. I also bought a shiatzu chair massager for 100 bucks and that helped ease the pain when it was hurting.
Thanks for some of your thoughts.
Funny thing is that everyone keeps telling me that swimming should be good for your lower back.
My pain begins in the water and as I increase laps it gets more painful. There is generally no pain when running or biking.
I don't think it's becasue of core weakness as I do quite a bit of core and back exercises.

Can you eleborate on pushing down with the chest?
The other thought I had was that it was casued by the rotation of my body on the stroke -in other words my upper body rotating to breath but my legs not enough and therby causing some torque. No idea how to prevent though.
In any case, I am close to calling it quits with self diagnosis and checking with a doctor - I just worry I'll hear the lazy doc answer:
Stop swimming.
If you hear "stop swimming" get another opinion. :)
By pushing down with my chest... ok, let's see. When swimming, I know having hips higher in the water is better. One way to get them higher is by having the front half lower -- like if you push on a stick on one end, the other side rises. However, sometimes (when I get the back pain) I feel like instead of working on lowering my front, I'm using my lower back to try to raise my hips -- curving my back a bit to get my tush higher.
I find that the lower back pain is less when instead of raising my hips by focusing on raising my hips I focus on lowering my chest. Chest is not quite right -- I mean the upper part of my front torso -- chest or upper ribs, depending on where I am in my rotation. If I try to keep the feeling of a bit of pressure downwards from them, or the feeling like a string is gently pulling from them to the bottom of the pool, then my lower back has to do less of the work.

It sounds to me like an irritation leading to mild inflammation which causes the nerve pain and stiffness.
You say you have a hard time bending when it is painful. I'd be curious if you can do this when you are sore. Sit in a chair, extend one leg straight . Then back down. Then the other leg straight out and back down.
I had a serious misalignment at Vertebrae L5 a number of years ago. This was the test that finally showed me how serious my problem was. I could only extend my right leg to about a 45 degree angle before my back would cause so much pain it would spasm.
Chances are your problem is not that bad. The exercises I do now to help with my lower back. Which may help you.
Yoga Triangle pose. For me seems to create space at my hips and also movement for my lower vertebrae. I'll often hear a pop as I go into this pose.
Cobra pose and Superman. These are more for strength building.
I typically go to a chiropractor once a month now. It's preventative maintenance at this point. Not to mention how much better I feel after an adjustment. Not quite a massage but it's close.
Hope you figure it out. Good Luck
I tried the chair test and I'm ok. I'll give some of the yoga positions a try incorporating into my stretches.
Kylie - I think I have a mental picture of what I need to do - I'll give it a shot next time I'm in the pool.
Thanks all.
well you may want someone to look at your technique. proper technique should not cause pain.
A second idea is to work on your flexibility. i learned in my athletic training class the other day that one main cause for low back pain is poor flexibility. try stretching before and after your swim. expecially your hamstring muscles.
If back pain happens only as a result of swimming then have someone look at your technique. You dont want to cause an injury from improper technique.
good luck
P.S when stretching to IMPROVE flexibility you must hold the stretch to mild discomfort for 30 seconds. Repeat the stretch 3-4 times. :)
kylie's spot on with pushing down on the chest to keep your hips from dropping. Try using a pull float, it'll help demonstrate the chest down form by raising your hips and legs to a more level, horizontal position, eliminating the middle sag that could be causing your back issues.
I went swimming yesterday and tried to concentrate on keeping my upper torso a little lower. I also did alternate with drills using a pull float. It seemed to help and I did not experience any pain. I'll have to keep with it and develop my muscle memory.
Thanks.

Has anyone expererienced lower back pain as a result of swimming freestyle. For some months now, the longer distances (1500 and greater) cause me lower back pain - in the disk area. The pain is temporary and goes away but pretty intense - so much so I actually have a hard time bending over for about 10 min after swimming. It seems to happen less frequently when swimming in the afternoon vs. the morning. With that in mind, I've tried to stretch really well prior to start but no luck. I've also tried changing my kick - no kick to big kick but again no luck.
Any suggestions?
