Road Races in the off Season

Hey Everybody,

I was wondering how people felt about doing road races in the off season? I was CC runner in HS, and have done a marathon and 1/2 marathon in the past. A nasty leg injury after the marathon 5 years ago (sort of related), and a broken clavicle a year ago have really broken up my running over the past years. I have been back in it for about 3 months now, and the run is starting to come back, but still needs improvement to get back up to previous levels.

Will aiming to improve my 5k and 10k times over the off season, tire out my legs for tri-season? I was thinking that getting some good times in would improve my confidence on pushing after T2, instead of running on the conservative side. I'll still be doing my base work on biking, and a little swimming.

Or should I just spend my winter working on my run, but not racing.

Any thoughts?

I'm doing short races to bring my running back to where I left it 2 months ago before borking my knee. As long as you're not trying to break any land speed records, I don't think it'd be a problem. It'll also keep you motivated throughout the base-season.

Road racing is fun...you know that. It's a great way to get in speed work, if you want that and a great way to get experience that will help in tri's. Racing at the shorter distances reguires less taper and less recovery. Go to races often...go hard if you want, but you don't have to "race" them. Get in with a local running club...mine for example has tons of races that are free to members...helps cut the cost.

my "off season" is really just "marathon season". Have a 1/2 next weekend (Seattle 1/2) and a full in January (Disney World). Then from there who knows. Gives me a reason to keep going through the winter and the Holiday Season relatively unscathed.

Off season races are a great way to get through the winter with some fitness goals and also to keep the interest level high if you are inclined to be competitive. I also use the winter to train for a marathon and the occasional 5k to 10k keeps me motivated.

I do road races all year long, and more of them when it is not tri season. I build them into my training as catered training runs. It gives me several smaller goals to work toward and keep me active.

I'll do 5K's and 10K's as well. If I have them on the calender, I'm more likely to keep training - keep's it interesting.
