It’s kind of strange that they announced a new race for the 2009 racing season, but they did with the addition of the Ironman New Orleans 70.3 race. Then today the news comes out that they just added Ironman 70.3 Kansas to the schedule for 2008. That makes 28th races in the series which will be 3 years old next year. I wonder if we will see almost 40 races in the series in 2009.

Simple economics. Supply and demand. Triathlon is HOT. People want it. They'll pay for it. WTC supplies it. Not any different than any other commodity you " just gotta have."

If it's supply and demand, why not add more 140.6 races? Everyone knows how fast they fill up.

You can make a lot of money on shorter races since expenditures are less. It's eaiser to convince a town or locality to shut down the place for half a day as opposed to all day, which keeps the locals happy and if they locals aren't happy...no race. More people are capable of finishing an HIM as opposed to an IM ( or at least they think they are.) Limiting the number of IM's helps to keep the race "special." The more of them (IM's) you have the fewer qualifying spots for Kona available at each one.
The situation is similar to Mary's and half Mary's. Marathons are popular, again, right now...but the number of half's has doubled in the last two years...eaiser to put on and you get more people.
Make no mistake...WTC or any large race company, is a money making operation. It's a business. All business is based on supply and demand and you want to make as much money as possible for the least expenditure.

Agreed - logistically the full IMs are difficult to organize, particularly the course - its less flexible unless you want multi loop rides and runs. I'd be up for more tho - don't get me wrong.

I think we're going to have to see another 1-2 North America based 140.6 races though - within the next 12 months. With the influx of 70.3's, people naturally start to target the 140.6 as the next stepping stone after that. Given the near impossibility to sign up for races unless you do it in person (the new shift), or within hours online - it seems only logical that they're going to find a place to host another 140.6.

being new to the sport and looking at olympics and half im's as challenging enough, i'm very happy about all the new 70.3 options - in fact i'm signed up for the new RI race! got the swim and bike endurance and am happy to work on the speed. just have to actually train to run a half - i'm on the 26 week plan, so i think i'll be ok come july.

maybe in 2009 or 2010, i'll be thinking about a full im.
