I spent part of yesterday and a bit of today doing my first ever roadie build. I learned a few lessons, and still have to practice handle bar wrapping a bit more. Drop bars are much harder than aero bars.

I'll post pictures tomorrow- yes, I am a tease.

This is a budget bike- all the major components are used (some very, very slightly) with a total out of pocket expense of $450.
Trek 2300 Frameset
Bontrager Race stem, handlebar, and seatpost.
Rolf Vector Comp 30mm wheels (stripped of decals for a cleaner look)
9 speed Ultrega group (for $50!!! Thanks, Boss!)
SRAM cassette and chain (new)

Shes got a couple paint blemishes, and some scratches on the crank and RD, but not too shabby for the money. And I got to build and learn some more.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

That's sounds like a solid setup. I've kicked the idea around some, as I'm always afraid I'll wreck the K-Factor before I even get it to Cd'A. It's nice to see that it's possible to get the parts reasonably as long as you can (or learn to) put the labor into it.

She was prety generous, and could have asked for a bit more money. The group came off a Ti bike she had that developed a crack. Trek (via Lemond, which was produced by Lightspeed. Merlin/ QR) warrantied the bike, and she ended up with a new Trek Madone. So the parts were just laying around. Good for me ;)

Labor is the big factor. This is my 5th build, first roadie. The first build is pretty intimidating, but there is a ton of resources out there, and it's honestly pretty hard to screw up. The headset would be the biggest worry with and external headset, but a bike shop can do it for you for around $10. I made a press and do it myself. Luckily, most roadies have internal headsets anymore, so that eliminates that job.

The Park Tools website is awesome. As are many others. There's so much information out there. And there's always me. I invite anyone doing a bike build to PM or IM me. I'm no expert, but could help you through pretty much anything in a basic build... just dont ask about buiding wheels... yet.

I'm so scared of putting a bike back together that I'm driving from Arizona to Idaho next year with the bike on the roof, just so I won't have to pack it up for the plane (and that's not even taking a bike ALL the way apart). Who knows how I'll shield it while on the road? I'm a wuss.

I can fit my 60cm bikes in the back of my Ford Focus by taking the front wheel off. The bike fits in a diagonal with the back seats down. Need more room? Take BOTH wheels off, and the frame fits in the trunk of a Toyota Camry. Lay a towel or two on top of the frame and lay the wheels on top of that. I hate driving long distance with my bikes on the rack. I worry about the bikes too much.

I could definitely do that in my Jetta, but the woman would hate me for limiting the number of bags she could pack. lol.

Get a roof carrier for the bags! They are protected and enclosed and a rock won't hurt 'em.

Of course you would be able to offer a perfectly legitimate solution! I shall prevail, though, because the woman in question does not frequent Trifuel. hah! But seriously, it is a thought, despite being reminiscent of a National Lampoon's vaction.

I'm fairly certain I could get it back together, it's more the undoing of getting the bike back to proper fit.

Back on topic! (sorry TriGuy) I'd like to see some pics. That's what we all came here for in the first place.

I just got back from an interstate Tri trip and took my bike on the plane.. Rented a bike bag from the local Tri shop, it's a Sci Con(i think) bag, only had to take the wheels and pedals off and the rest goes in the bag in 1 piece
I found it awesome!
And I literally walked in the house about 2 hours ago...

It's a thing of beauty. Oh, not because it's a Trek...but because it's your first road build! Nice Job. Being your own wrench can be real satisfying...

Leave the spacers on...as he gets older he'll need to keep raising the bar! ;)

It's at the shop for the hack job. I gotta get myself a miter box so i can cut em nice and straight. I'll do that for the next build.

Miter box? Just get a pipe cutter, works beautifully on everything except carbon.

Even steel? I've havent found a pipe cutter for a reasonable price that can cut 1 1/8th" steel. Have a particular model?

Even steel. Takes a little more time and patience. But I just have a basic one from Lowe's. Cost around $10. The last fork I did was 1 1/8" steel, no problem.

Awesome. Good to know. I'll pick one up for my next job. How many tubes can one cut before it wears out?

I've got a Rigid (brand name) three wheel pipe cutter...It's ten years old and I haven't had to replace any of the cutting wheels yet, and I cut stuff all the time. ...Aluminum, steel, copper, plastic.

I've gone through a few but cutting different materials and such it's hard to tell when they are going to go. But then again I use the cheap one so I always have a couple of extra cutting wheels on hand.

Great bike. The bar tape looks fine (maybe that was a second try). Red bar tape is always sweet. Not quite as cool as white, but cool nonetheless.
