i get bored in the winter when its snow and ice on the ground and i cant cycle, rollerblade, or anything. how do you guys stay in shape and train in the winter? i guess i can still swim and run but sometimes its even dangerous to run when theres ice on the sidewalks. What other ideas are there besides the stationary bike and the treadmill :(

Running can be mimicked very closely by aqua jogging. I've never liked it much but its THE BEST cross training to do if you have a running injury. And if its just winter and you don't like running on a treadmill I suppose it could be a good substitute as well.

I'll run outside all winter - dress properly and the cold/snow/ice not really a problem.
Get some rollers to go along with the trainer for the bike. Many will use mountain bikes for additional biking through the winter.
Of course, the pool is available.
I will cross-country ski for a good cross training workout.
And setting up the next season race and training schedules.

I have 2 weeks of vacations planned to warm beaches, and I'm flirting around with http://www.P90X.com for another 13 weeks. P90X takes 1hr 20min per day, so I doubt I'd get much swim/bike/run in for those 3 months. Not too concerned about losing time in Tri's since my goals for 08 are to finish 4 or 5 olympic tri's, and finish my first marathon in Oct, all with zero injuries.

Here, I am able to swim, run and bike all winter which is nice. BUT I have lived where it was cold and snowy all winter (Alaska). You can run all winter (I always did) , xcountry ski, snowshoe, swim. In the rare event that it gets too cold to bike here (in other words if we have snow or ice) I pull out the cyclops for my bike and ride that for a while.

Running year-round is definitely doable. When it gets really icy, I would suggest throwing on a pair of Yaktrax or some similar product. With those and some good winter running clothes, you're all set.

Personally, I'm not sure how I will cope with workouts on the trainer, but at least with running I'm able to get outside. I think the key is to keep your schedule fairly flexible (ie, skipping that outdoor run and doing a ride on the trainer instead when there's freezing rain outside).

You dont have active winter sports in your area? SC skiing is AWESOME for cross training. Snowshoeing is fantastic as well. I live in the wrong state for that stuff. Winter for us is "go long" season. We can actually run for a couple hours without dangers of heat exhaustion.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Go rent a few Warren Miller films this weekend and just watch them...After go directly to the nearest ski/board shop and grab either a Snowboard or some skis(I recommend Snowboarding). To me there is nothing like flying down the moutain listening to music boarding....you will be hooked. Let it snow!!!!

It is all about the XC. Try to get out a couple times a week during the winter. Big pool time as well.
I run outside all year (in the snowmobile tracks in the winter).
I also enjoy indoor rock climbing as well. Just something a little different.
