I am training for my first sprint and wanted to know if I should be doing interval workouts or just building endurance? My swim distance is improving a ton and I started simulating open water by not kicking off the wall at the end of the pool, just turning and start swimming again.

What else should I be doing? I am up to 1000m Freestyle without stopping then 600m without touching the wall. My sprint is a 600m swim. Any suggestions?

if you already have the endurance base to do 1000m freestyle, then your focus should be to increase power and speed over that distance or shorter. Interval type workouts will give you better payoff for your sprint race than trying to build longer distances without adding power and speed.

also you might want to find some places to do a real open water swim. It really is a major difference in breathing/sighting then in a pool. For my first tri I was glad i got a few in before my race.

A couple of useful power drills

After say 300m warm up at a gentle pace have a brief break then rip out 10 100's with 10 second rest after each, going as hard as you can. I you push hard enough you may find you don't make it to 10 initially. Timimg these 100m sprints allows you to plot your improvement. Over coming weeks you can increase up to 12 15 18repeats, or take on 7 by 250 say.

The other is medley. This will make you use different muscles in different ways, Really push the breaststroke. I do 15 by 100medley with 25 butterfly, 25 breaststroke, 25 backstroke, 25 hard free, that order and it still kills me.

Happy swimming
