Knee pain when running, should I swim/bike or rest?
In my history, knee pain as usually revolved around impact, and I've always found that takes longer to resolve than I like. If swimming is not bothering the knee, can you switch up to that for a few weeks and let the knee rest without impact for a while?
I think knee problems in particular are worthy of extra caution given that they are critical to pretty much everything we do.
Biking can also contribute to knee problems if you're not in solid alignment on the bike - might be worthy of a quick look to make sure you're not out of alignment on your ride as well.
Just a few thoughts.
To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!
I had similar issues before an IM in 2004. Doc said NO running or biking and I could swim and not kick...took a little over two weeks to calm down...did just fine at the IM.
Pool running may be a help, too. Being the soul of caution (37 years of running and the knees are still good) see a Doc. I'm all with cj on this...the knees are far to valuable to monkey around with...seeing an orthopod may help get things right...Find one that knows runners.

Sounds similar to what I did to myself at the Urbanathlon. I took 1 week off completely, added some biking after that, then light jogging, weight lifting, and here we are 5 weeks later and I'm almost ready for a slow 5k next weekend.
Sucks.
I should have gone to see a specialist (it is covered by insurance and all) when it happened, but I have this completely irrational fear of going to the doctor and never got further than looking one up. Now I won't know if it was a serious problem if/until it comes up again, and then it'll be worse. Get it checked out.
Ditto to getting it checked out.
If you want a quick test as to whether it's impact related, or friction related, hop in the pool for a pool running session.
Make sure to tell the doc the difference in feelings between normal running and pool running. ;)

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I am going to stop running for 2 weeks and hopefully it will heal by itself. If not, I will go check a Doc. I really don't, if so a little, feel any pain when I am biking/swimming. It seems like it hurts during my running at the moment right before my feet hit the ground when my foot is in mid air and my leg is stretching.
I had the same thing starting about 2 weeks ago. I'm 99% sure I caused it training too soon after the marathon I did. It wasn't so much hurting that I couldn't run - but it was annoying and I was fairly concerned I'd end up 'really' hurting it. Last Thursday I decided to do a slow run intsead of the intervals planned, and it was still hurting afterwards - so I took off Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon. I was feeling pretty solid by Tuesday morning so I resumed then. I think the four days was key though. It may of course take longer - and I think the two weeks you have is a good plan. For me I have a race this weekend, so that was a bit tough. But after that...plenty of time to rest.

I would stay off of running until the knee feels better and then adjust your technique to prevent recurrance. Gradually work on getting your weight forward onto the forefoot and off the heel. This allows your body's natural shock absorption system to work for you. There is almost no shock absorbing tissue between the heel and the knee, so landing with the weight on the heel makes knee injuries very likely.
Good luck,

I started having pain in my right knee after running downhill 2 weeks ago and after trainining more intensively. Since then, the pain has been coming back everytime I run. I was wondering whether I should rest for a week or 2 or should I be able to keep swimming and biking as it is less painful. If I should rest, how long should I rest? I rested for 2 days but it didn't work... I want to keep training but I don't want to destroy my body.
Help please =D
