Lately (read last 3-4 weeks) I have been super stressed and as a result haven't been training. I used to wake up at like 4-5 in the morning energized ready to go, would eagerly look forward to training. Now I can barely drag by butt out of bed 45 min before I absolutely have to be somewhere, have no motivation/energy to train. The only thing that is keeping me from ballooning up is the fact that I am eating pretty decent. I know where the stress is coming from, but I think I need to figure out a way to deal with it since stress in life is somewhat constant. Any tips, ideas, anything? Just kind of felt like venting, and expressing my frustration.

Sometimes in life you hit spots where all you need to do is take a break. All I can say is that if you force yourself to workout when you are not really in the mood, you run the risk of burning out and possibly losing your love for it.

Just take you time and get everything in order before you start to stress out even more about not having a desire to workout. Good luck and I wish you the best.

Don't mean to sound flippant, but, just do it. Remember how good you used feel after a hard workout? You can still get that same rush, it's just a matter of getting out the door. If it's not working at 5:00 a.m., which is hard anyway, start with something later in the day.

I agree, everyone needs a break now and then, but 3-4 weeks is a slump not a break. Take control of your stress, don't let it consume your day. A workout is something you can control and in return you get back energy, confidence and the ability to better deal with stresses.

Start out slow, put the workouts down on your calendar, make the commitment even when you don't feel like it. Give it a shot. What do you have to lose, a 1/2 hr swim, bike or run?

Try a run this afternoon.:)

You are not alone. I just came through the same thing. I trained hard and raced hard last year and did an off-road 50K a few months ago. I don't have any other races on my calender this year and I was slacking. I[m used to always having something on the calender and being in tip top shape. But I took some time off and I'm only running 3-10 miles a few days a week and maybe swimming one day a week. No biking. I finally got to the point where I was just going through the motions and running easy. Well, last Saturday I met with my running team and ran 11 miles. At the 10 mile mark I had beat my previous 10 mile PR by 5 minutes and I felt great! That motivated me to get going again. Since then I have PR'ed in 3 out of my last 4 runs! Sometimes you just need a short break.

The other thing I would say is, if you know what is stressing you out, deal with that first or it won't go away.

The race is just the finale to all of your training. Enjoy the celebration.

I too live in a high stress world. One thing I always try to keep in mind is that stress is psychological and chemical. Exercise helps process and rid the body of the chemicals from stress. But, making exercise contribute to the stress by making it hard has made it worse for me from time to time.

I've tried to vary it up when that happens and try to go get some exercise from a different sport. I also lay off the early morning stuff too. (I did almost all my training for last September between 4 and 6 am).

I like long slow rides on my mountain bike rather than my racing bike during those times.

Just a thought.

Look at your stressers and deal with them...are there things you can let go of or change? Is stress, stressing you out? Is it time for a drastic change? Is the stress you are living with right now worth the outcome?...lots of questions to ask which only you can answer...but we're here for ya.

Even superstars get flat zones. I am shite during winter, no light can't go for a ride in the evenings, cold and raining on the way to the pool.

Excercise wise I agree with the guys get out there and do some stuff but either write out an maintenance plan that is regular but only does brief high intensity stuff and maybe is 60-75% of a normal week. Write it for 3 or 4 weeks and stick to it even if you feel great half way thru. You are generally amping to get into by the end.

Stress wise there is no easy solution. I work in a high conflict zone, we are busy. I keep a list of every unresolved issue and task and take great pleasure in eliminating these with a black marking pen. Sometimes you find that dealing with the tasks is easier than the anticipation of having to deal with them.
