2008 Vineman 70.3
Awesome - we'll see you there. I just signed as well - up any idea of best places or suggested places to stay - when is the best time to book?
I'd like to book our accomodations too. I figure the best places will fill up, so now is probably the best time to book. I haven't figured it all out yet, but I'll definitely keep you posted...

Does the vineman 70.3 sell out? What do they cap the participants at? I want to sign up for it once i cross the finish line at the oceanside 70.3 race at the end of march. Will there still be registration slots left?
Its capped at 2000 spots - not sure if it sells out or not.
I think it sells out, but I can't remember when.
For places to stay there are some bed and breakfast style ones by the start, or there are hotels in driving distance. The tricky part is there are two transition areas, and you finish by T2. So you have to be at T1 in the morning (swim start and T1) and then you end ~20ish min drive away at T2, where the finish line also is. They do have shuttles from T2 back to T1 if you need to get back after the race, but I'm not sure if they let you take a bike on it or just go to get your car as I've never used them.
Best of luck, it is an awesome race! Right now I don't think it is in the schedule, but it is a maybe for me and Mike.

I did the Full Vineman in Aug 07, and it is a great course. not too hilly on the bike, and nice on the run. as far as places to stay, I would stay in Santa Rosa. Its a great area about 25 mins from the race start, and about 15-20 from the finish. Plus it is much more populated than Guerneville, or Windsor, the start and finish spots respectively.

I just signed up for the 70.3 as well!

Last year they sold out during the first week of March. With the rising poularity of triathlon, and the fact that this is a great race, I suspect the race will sell out faster this year. They cap the race at 2,000 athletes...
Hope this helps,

i did it last year and im doing it again. got beat my time. i stayed in Santa Rosa. there is a great sushi place there.
the drive there wouldnt have been bad if a stupid cow didnt block the highway at like 545 in the morning

I'm so excited, I can hardly stand it! Registration for the 2008 Vineman 70.3 opened up today, and all I can say is...Northern California, here we come!!!
In September of 2006, we completed our first race, the Sprint portion of the TexasMan...and I'll never forget how I felt that day. Even though I was near the back of the pack, the announcer called out my name, the crowd was cheering, and I felt like I just won the World Championships. I had completed what had seemed like an insurmountable obstacle. The sport of triathlon rewarded me richly, and I instantly knew there was more to be had.
Over the next couple of months, Jennifer and I talked about our goals. We wanted to go longer, and our conversations would always drift towards an Ironman and how impossible it seemed. We would laugh at the prospect of going that long, and our conversation would always turn towards something more realistic like an Olympic or perhaps a Half Ironman.
For Christmas that year, I surprised Jenn with a bundle of triathlon gear. Socks, Ironman hats, books on going long, a race belt, and the movie "What it Takes". Little did I know, she surprised me with several books like "Becoming an Ironman" and "25 Years of the Ironman World Championships". After sifting through all of these gifts, we looked at each other like kids that had just discovered the world's greatest secret. We realized that we had been dreaming of an Ironman all along, but had always written it off as something "impossible". Well...now we were finally able to admit it. Isn't it a wonderful feeling when your dreams become a reality?
The beauty of completing any long-term goal lies within the journey, so we decided to make a 3-year plan and simply take things one year at a time. Consider it stepping stones if you will -- a seasoning process that would expose us to many different races in hopes of teaching us what we needed to know along the way. And so the journey began. For the 2007 season, we signed up for 2 Sprints, 1 Olympic, and then finished out the year with a Half-Iron Relay at the Longhorn Triathlon Festival. Our sister-in-law did the swim, I completed the bike-portion, and Jenn ran the half-marathon. 2007 was a raging success! We're still smiling from ear-to-ear and we're hungry for more.
Now a new challenge lies before us: the 2008 Vineman 70.3! Training kicks off this January when we travel to Tucson for a 9 day self-directed training camp.
Somehow, I think 2008 is going to be a great year! :)
