This week NOVA is airing a special they did on 13 runners headed for Boston. They're taking a look at what marathon training has done to their bodies physically and what it takes mentally. A friend caught and early screening and said it was pretty amazing. Here's a link to more info: NOVA

I watched it last night. I thought it was very well done and hopefully motivates some more sedentary people to take up exercise. I liked that one of the experts on the show was careful to point out that the health gains the group experienced can be had without training for a marathon. And I also liked that they didn't sugarcoat the numerous injuries the new runners experienced.

My only quibble was around the relatively short (9 month) timeframe that the participants had to go from zero training to the marathon. I understand why NOVA did it, but it might have been nice if someone pointed out that a year or so of consistent lower mileage is recommended by some experts prior to marathon training to cut the chance of injury.

I liked it. but actually thought it was kinda weird that after 9 months they only ran up to 20 miles. guess I'm too aggressive. but they did get 12 out of 13 to cross the line so I guess it worked.

I caught about the last 45 minutes or so and really enjoyed it. Hopefully it will help people realize it's never too late to get started and motivate more to get moving. Sometimes I think it really is harder to get to the starting line than it is to get to the finish line.

I also saw the last 45 minutes. It made me realize I take a lot for granted. Specifically how lucky I am to be living this lifestyle and remaining injury free for the last 9 years.

Seeing how hard the people pushed themselves and how much joy they got out of finishing and how the experience positively changed their lives was inspiring.

I need to volunteer at a marathon and a tri.

Always, always, always volunteer at least once a year.
I plan my Volunteering like I do my regular races...three this year.
But you don't have to plan...If you race a shorter race jump in afterward for cleanup...if it's local...go to packet stuffing. Lots of ways to give back, and if you aren't doing it shame on you...(good natured finger wagging.)

I have volunteered at local 5k's and will again this Thanksgiving morning. It is the bigger ones that require most of the day and some travel that I have never done. I am feeling the urge to give back and, somewhat selfishly, to experience a large race without worrying about my performance. If that makes any sense.

I saw that, it was good.

Although the 9 month training period for the sedentary lifestyle they all pretty much had seemed pretty short.

It was good but I'll never understand the "reality tv show" type mentality of taking bums and lard asses and average joes and people who obviously aren't athletes and don't train andn using them? I'm sure Uta and all the rest of the pros really enjoyed them? Their finishing times were like 4 hours to 7 hours. They didn't even run. I enjoyed the show but why not use 3 hour runners or people who at least didn't eat cupcakes and take walk breaks.

my cynical answer is it is more dramatic for TV to see the transformation not mention to the suspense will they make it?

but also it shows how the body changes from a coach potato to an athlete

I believe this was the intent of the special.

I thought it was good. I also thought the graphic of the difference between a stress fracture and a normal frastructure was very valuable in understanding the two and how to avoid injuring it more.

However, it seemed like they could have focused a bit more on the training aspect (schedule/structure) and probably a bit more on the race - perhaps stretching out the 60 minute show to 2 x 60 minutes.

Good stuff overall though!

I'm young right now, but I'm hoping to do my first marathon, placing very well by the time I'm a senior in HS, or 18

i agree. the show was good and interesting but there was not enough of the science stuff, niot enough of the training stuff and not enough of the race stuff. seemed to gloss over too much
