Training Question.
I wanted to do a runthrough by trying all the events I was training for with sprints -- mostly for the confidence that I could do it. However, I never had a setup where I could easily so I never did.
Personally I find training the sports separate with some bike-run bricks works for me (for the physical aspects of the race). The part to be ready for after the swim is just that it can feel a bit weird to jog on your legs right after a swim (to get to transition) so perhaps make sure you are comfortable with how you feel for that after some of your swim workouts.

A word of advice I would give you is to at least practice one swim directly into a run. I am a water swallower, so when I swim I get a lot of either pool water or lake water in my gut. It never bothers me on the bike, but for some reason when I get out there to run, it just kills me. The more I practice running after a swim, the better I feel. I would just suggest that if you are doing shorter distance races you at least try it once to see how your system reacts.
I've done all 3 events together as part of training but it's not the most practical way to train. The real payoff is in approaching your training for each event so that you strengthen your weakest event foremost then get used to the bike-to-run feel by using bike-run brick workouts.
The swim-to-bike brick isn't really as big a deal since your legs should still be fresh since you'll mostly be using your upper body in the swim.
Once you establish competency in each the areas, it's helpful to do bricks in two of the events that span the duration of your expected race effort (this loses some meaning when you get to the ironman range, but for now, it's a decent start). Save these 'bricks' to do once a week.
Swim to bike, or swim to run, run-to-bike, etc. Like Kylie said, having done a triathlon before really boosts your confidence, when you go to do the next triathlon.
For that reason alone, I encourage you to do your first sprint with minimal reading on how to approach it. Make mistakes, learn from it, the experience will be much richer.
And don't forget the 4th sport - transitions. Those things can change a race outcome.

We are taught that we should not do a three event brick work out while training, unless it is a very short event. But, a swim to run like Kylie said is a good start and then a bike to run to test out those legs.
Thanks. I think for me its really more of a matter of knowing I will survive. It sounds so lame for just a sprint, but I think its a confidence builder.

That's certainly one way to be well hydrated at the start of the bike. :)
