Swimming IS important! (and a funny story)
LOL! That's great! The Desoto course can be brutal. Way to pull off the win- and get a free shirt!
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
People don't take swimming seriously. If you swim faster, the swim is easier.... setting you up for a good ride. You can get away and are out of sight and out of mind. Big psychological boost. Those behind start racing for second if they can't see you.
Great job and way to snag a free shirt.
:D great Job and great puking!!!! jajaja
Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)

It doesn't matter what I did with the shirt.....the important part here is that I kissed my girlfriend before I told her I threw up. :D

You boys are all the same... Mike comes running out of T2 in Kona and gave me a kiss and then told me about puking for the whole bike ride...

Well it was less the race and more the stomach flu that he had :(

Ew! You boys!
I've puked across the finish line a couple of times, but I certainly wouldn't inflict that on the bf...
Congrats on the win, Matt!
Great shirt :p

I figured that it was a fluke since every other race is won on either the bike or the run, but maybe swimming fast actually can let you win a race!
Ha!!! Trust me... you can win stuff from the front. :)

Yeah...I've never won a race where I wasn't in first within the first mile of the bike. Maybe one of these days I'll learn how to do that whole running thing.....

I won a race a few weeks ago even though I got matched on the bike by two guys and outrun by both of them just because I was able to gap them by a couple minutes on the swim. I figured that it was a fluke since every other race is won on either the bike or the run, but maybe swimming fast actually can let you win a race! I got outbiked and outrun by a several guys on Saturday, but was able to hold on because of a good swim, so I guess that's good news for all of us swimmers-turned-triathlete. So here's a boring race report followed by a funny story:
Suncoast Tri at Ft. Desoto (1/3 S, 10.3 B, 3.1 R)
Swim 7:54 (into the current) for 5/400. All the people who beat me were swimmers who showed up for a triathlon, not really triathletes, so they couldn't bike or run as fast as they swam. No biggie.
Bike 25:44 @ 24.0 mph for 4/400. I did the same course in August at 25.1 mph, so it's getting pretty obvious that my legs are going down the crapper! Good thing I only have one race left! :D
Run 20:30 for 12/400. The run was little long since nobody was under 19 minutes, plus half of it was sand. So here's the good part:
I had almost a 2-minute gap on 2nd place starting the run, but I still wanted to run hard in case there was a fast old guy in a later wave that I didn't know about. Apparently I went a little too hard and was cramping a bit in the second mile. While I was cramping, one guy starting to close the gap (I'm not a very good runner to begin with, so when I'm going even sower than usual, he was able to run me down pretty quickly). I thought I was alone, but at the turnaround I saw him about 50 m back from me and I starting running harder. I ran the last 1.5 miles or so looking over my shoulder, trying to keep him back. He had the fastest run split of the day and made me run a lot harder in the last mile than I'm used to. I was able to hold him off by 26 seconds, but after I crossed the finish line I leaned over the finish chute and showed everyone what color Gatorade I was drinking on the bike! About 3 times. :D One of the business-owners from the expo came up to me and told me that his shop wanted to give me a free t-shirt for my win. Here's what it said:
Triathlon.....just puke, it tastes like chicken.
