Night Shift

Well, the inspiration for this thread is obvious....I am on hour 15 of a 16 hour night shift. Just wondering if anyone else here works the graveyard shift like me. I always have a hard time recovering from night work and it affects my training. I Would like to know if anyone has hints or tips for a faster recovery. I work 2 weeks nights, then 2 weeks day work. I can't even get a normal sleep pattern down. Am I just screwed in general?:confused:

I worked in a Psych Hospital on the night shift for some years while I was working on my Masters. (Oh! so THAT's his problem!)
At the time I was running tons... 65-70 mile weeks. Getting a schedule to work is really hard but I found that being flexible helps...I'd usually run after work about 7:30 am..have some dinner and try and get some sleep. On waking in the afternoon I'd often get in a second run..easier,shorter than the one in the am. sometimes I'd make the second workout, and sometimes I wouldn't...I often ran in the dark...
Good luck and remember...don't skip sleep for workouts. Working night shift is much harder on the body than day shift. Those working the dark side often suffer more illnesses and suffer from short term memory loss than daytime counterparts.

You were 'working' in a Psych Hospital? Uh-huh, likely story :D

Anyway,

Anton is right on about being flexible and not depriving yourself of sleep.

If you are on this 2 week on 2 week of nights all the time you can make a semi regular schedule. The training can help you get a more consistant sleep.

Also, if you have some down time like many night shift jobs do, implement push ups and sit ups, and maybe bring some resistance bands to work with you.

I do push ups a few times a day and use the resistance bands later in the day when I am the only person in my office. It helps pass the time constructively.

I worked strictly graveyards for almost 20 years. You have to accept being a "night creature". I did my workouts when I woke up in the afternoon/early evening.

Now I work mostly pm's with some graves thrown in. Switching back and forth is much worse than doing just one shift. I second everyone else's advice on not skipping sleep. You only end up getting sick. Listen to your body. If you're up for a hard workout, do it. If you're not, do what you feel you can and call it a day.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, working nights is not ideal for training. I do work out in the afternoon before I go into work. My body is usually so tired that I end up skipping more workouts than I would on day shift. I guess I'm wondering if its more beneficial to work out than sleep. Looks like most people side with sleep. Good idea...yawn...
