100 mile training rides before IM
doesn't it feel great when you get your first century ride in.
right now, for IMKY probably NONE unless you are doing it for fun.
We are doing IMFL in less than 3 weeks. Our training plan built us up to 2 long bike rides, the longest being 6 - 6 1/2 hours like 2 weeks ago. It was built up from 2-3 hours rides, to 3-4 hour rides, to 4-5 hour rides, then the long ones.
Our IM training plan was 20 weeks long, right now for you it's too early to be training for IMKY. Do you have a training plan, that should help you figure out how many rides you need to get in of that distance.

Nick's right. congrats and awesome on that first 100 miler. The more of those in the bank the better. but you shouldn't be working on that just yet for next year. make sure to do some cross training and not get to regimented through the winter or you'll risk burning out. My plan for Florida was about 20 weeks as well. I probably got in 6 90-100 milers. Before that is was just riding to stay in shape and for fun.
Bottom line is it depends on your goals.
I did a 36 week program that slowly built up the long rides. I did a total of 4 100 or 100plus milers and each included a 45-55 minute run immediately after. After completing the first one I started to think that I could actually complete an IM. All 4 were within 3 months of the actual race though.
Building for IMFLA I did 5 100mile plus rides/bricks. That is more than some should do, but as cycling is a strong discipline for me, and I have been doing it for years, I can do long bikes without it killing me. Running on the other hand is a whole different story!
i did my first 100 miler sunday, I'm doing IM Louisville in late august 08, how many or how often should i be doing rides around 100 miles?
Way to go, getting your first century ride in the books.
To you, and all new trifuelers, I say again, fill out your profile.
Most questions beginning with, What should I do....?
cannot be answered sensibly without knowing your profile.
Goals, residence region, age, weight, athletic experience, preferred distance, time constraints, health, all bear upon training questions. Without such background info, advice is meaningless, possibly harmful.
in 2006 I rode 11x100milers before IMC, each successive w/e prior to the race, up until 2 weeks before. IMC bike split = 7:09:32
This year I rode one century 7 weeks prior. IMC bike split = 7:02:57:
My bike splits each year were only 5 minutes different.
cheers,

The more 100+ rides the better or a few as necessary. Depends. In your journey to IMKY you'll have to find what works for you. I think it's fine to ride centuries before your training starts. Good way to know what you are capable of...don't wear yourself ragged though.
Kudos on your first century!
